Hi

I just purchased a R23 and it has the macerator toilet. I have never had one of these before, just used the porto potty on my previous boats. I was just looking for how to run/empty this toilet before the family starts filling the tank.

Thanks

It is a fairly simple system. The toilet brings in raw water from a seacock. It then grinds up the waste and moves it to a holding tank. When the tank gets close to full, you go to a marina that has a pump out station and have them empty it. My marina charges $4. There is an access cap (mine is on the port side) that they use to pump out.

To make sure the toilet is working, first find the seacock for the head and make sure it is open so that the pump can draw water. Then find the holding tank and make sure it isn't full. There is also a Y valve at or near the holding tank that allows you to pump waste overboard. Make sure the valve is set to send the waste to the tank. And if it isn't already, remove the handle from the tank or otherwise secure it so no one moves it to overboard discharge by mistake.

Next, push the flush and hold the flush button. You should hear the pump and see water dump into the bowl. Add a little holding tank treatment (most boat supply stores carry it). You are ready to go. After you use the toilet, hold the flush button down until all the waste is gone, plus a couple seconds. Only use marine rated TP. Hope that helps.

Be sure to familiarize yourself with dumping regulations. Generally you must be 3 miles from shore for ocean dumping. There are other local and protected area restrictions. You can also find free or low cost stations to pump out that were subsidized with federal dollars for the equipment. The program is part of an initiative to encourage people to do the right thing with waste. But $4 is a very reasonable charge.

Hi,
I have found it is helpful to google the name & make of the exact item I want to learn about, you can often find YouTube videos and or owners manuals.
Hope all are safe in these crazy times!

In Washington State, pump outs are free at most marinas. Many boat launches have self service pumpout stations, and there are a few self service pump out barges at marine state parks. Until recently, British Columbia was less strict about where you could discharge overboard, but I think that has changed.

A macerator toilet will grind up human waste and up to modest amounts of toilet paper. Nothing else should be put down the toilet. Sounds obvious but if you have guests on board it might need to be said or have a sign next to the toilet

I saw a note on a boat's toilet that said "Other than toilet paper, don't put anything in here that you have not eaten first!"

We use ziplock sandwich bags for our tissue waste. No paper in our holding tank. And after the waste is pumped out, we fill the tank with fresh water and then pump out again to help rinse the holding tank.

Never put toilet paper down your toilet. Unless you like cleaning clogs made from toilet paper 😀 😀
