Many thanks to Tim and Ivan who walked us through and trained us up on our new r-29 tug Strange Fish. Ordered in late Feb of this year and spent the ensuing months watching/reading everything I could. Happily piloted her home today from Des Moines to Pleasant Harbor. The dogs managed the 60nm trip well and I'm a very happy customer!

Congratulations on your new R29, a great boat for making new cruising memories.

Congrats with the new boat! Out of curiosity, what was your cruising RPM/speed? Pleasant Harbor is a beautiful place, just came back from there a week ago.

Well, it's still in the break-in period so have been varying the speed quite a bit but was quite comfortable at 3400/18kts or so and at 1500/7.5kts. I got the sense there was a fuel economy valley somewhere in the middle in which the burn rate remained the same despite the lower rpm/speed so it just made sense to go on up to 18kts. The boat is surprisingly comfortable and relatively quiet at those higher speeds, even with the cockpit door and windows open. I'm also a big fan of the rear helm station on a nice day like yesterday so I've been doing a fair bit of popping to neutral and switching stations.

I think you will get even better numbers after the break in period 😀
We also cruise either slow or fast, everything in between makes little sense. This is the beauty of Ranger Tugs - you can cruise slow and still outrun the weather if needed.
