Newbies. Question 2

Hello All!

Another question, if you don't mind. We have a 2012 RT-29. Yanmar 260 engine.

Last weekend we filled the fresh water holding tank and turned on the Water Pressure pump. Shortly thereafter, the automatic bilge came on about every 2 minutes spitting out about a cup and half of water.
Additionally, the Water Pressure pump would kick on about every 5 minutes, followed quickly by the bilge activating. I don't think that is how this is supposed to work, right?

I am guessing that we have a leak somewhere in/on our fresh water holding tank. Am I close in my diagnosis?

Would love to hear any and all opinions on this matter.

Your water pressure pump should not turn on at all if all the faucets are off and not dripping. I agree you have a leak in the system somewhere.

I am guessing that we have a leak somewhere…….

I have a 2012 R27. When my fresh water system started to leak, I found the source to be a hairline crack on the back of the plastic “city water” inlet. As the crack grew, so did the amount of water it leaked. That water ended up in the bilge. I never used the city water inlet so I was surprised to find it leaking. That’s when I discovered that when the house water system is pressurized by the pump, water pressure is supplied to the back of the inlet.

On my boat, the city water inlet is located on the starboard side. Ranger Tugs quit installing them not long after my model year. These inlets are problem prone and, given the right series of failures, can flood your boat if hooked up to a dockside water source. I know little about the R29, but if a city water inlet is installed on your boat, it most likely will be on the side of the boat where the galley sink and head are located.

I did not repair the inlet. I never used it and deactivated it by capping it off and plugging the water line leading to it.

I believe the bilge pumps are designed to automatically kick on every couple of minutes, regardless of your other issue.

The symptoms you describe are exactly the symptoms I experienced about a month ago on our 2020 R 29. While poking around looking for a failed hose or fitting, what I discovered was a wet cushion in the mid-berth area (the cave) caused by the hot water tank leaking.

The water heater is located at the forward end of the cave and there is an inspection panel that allows a visual inspection of that area—you’ll need a flashlight. The leak was coming from the front plastic cover on the tank. After removing the plastic cover (4 screws), I discovered that the gasket had failed on the front of the tank. The wiring connections to the thermostat and heater elements were discolored from the leaking water so I decided to replace the entire tank. The original tank was an Isotemp marine water heater built in the fall of 2018. Do you have a hot water tank on board? If so, be sure to check it for leaks.
