Good morning,

My brother in law pointed out that the upgrade to Aquamaps is only $14/year and you get a lot of new functions, including better wind, tides, currents, USACE maps, AIS, route planning, etc. I’ve been using this map as my back up plotter, route planner and ActiveCaptain source for years, having only paid for it once (frankly, I do not know how they are making money on this app). And I use Windy as my primary weather forecast source.

So I upgraded to all the new functions and thought I would crowdsource a review from those who use this app (this is not about Navionics, just Aquamaps). What works, what doesn’t seem to work, and what are you most reliant on? First thing I noticed about their current plots made me suspicious, especially when I noticed 2 kt currents on land! Either I missed the tsunami warning or it is just using wind forecasts.

Thanks. Always appreciate the beta from this site.

I like Aqua Maps primarily for the much less cluttered screen and fast performance (compared to Navionics). I pay for the upgrade version to support it. I also like the ACE soundings, and active captain integration.

OTOH, I don't use the route planner primarily because AFAIK it is entirely manual and not automatic like Navionics. I usually set routes directly on the chartplotter in the boat anyway so that is not a big deal. When I want a preview at home of a automatic route I will use Navionics but for everything else -- familiarizing with routes, checking active captain, onboard backup, and display for the admiral -- I use AquaMaps. Mostly just personal preference, I think!
