Hi,

I have a 2021 R29-CB and did my first 100 hour service interval last year with a Volvo tech to change filters, fluids, etc.. I asked for extra filters so that I would have spares. For the NextGen generator, I have two spare filters which are R12T 10-micron filters; however, I was perusing what I think is the correct manual for my generator and I noticed that the manual recommends 2-micron fuel filters (R12S filters, I believe). Did the tech give me the wrong filters? I would think that if the generator owners manual recommends 2-micron filters, that it would be a very bad thing to be using 10-micron filters as it would allow particles to get into the engine / fuel system. Can someone from the Ranger factory confirm? Thanks!

Darryl,

As you noted, there are two fuel filters for the NextGen generator. On our 2019 C-28, the first one is a metal can (no see-thru cup) that has a 10 micron filter in it. According to the factory, this is a pre-filter to scoop out the big stuff.

(Note: The metal can on our first filter rusted to the top and can't be removed so, not knowing what was going on inside, I just plumbed around it and have been using just the second, 2 micron filter).

The second is the clear cup filter with a 2 micron filter. Again according to the factory, you absolutely have to have a 2 micron filter in that last filter. Have Too!

The design seems silly to me with the two filters so I am presently dumping the two tiny filters for one new, Racor 500 filter with a single 2 micron filter inside. The factory apparently thought that the two filter design would save on internal filter replacements. My opinion, the larger 2 micron filters are cheap and I can carry spares if I need to change it out. I like the larger 500 filter. It can hold more water if that is an issue and is easier to see the water and sludge. Bob/Bradenon

Thanks for the info. In my case, my generator has two inline filters that look identical, closely positioned to each other. They are the same size (smaller than the engine's primary fuel filter) with a clear bowl for visibility. Perhaps the first filter is a 10-micron and second filter is a 2-micron (?). I'll check it next time on the boat to be sure. In the end, makes sense that I definitely want a 2-micron filter for the second filter. Thanks!
