Maureen and I have now completed the application process for a Nexus Card. The card allows you to enter the US and Canada without having to "stop" in and clear customs. You simply call an 800 number 30 minutes prior to entering either country (but not more than four hours), furnish the person on the phone with the required information and hopefully they will tell you to continue on your voyage once they give you your clearance number. There is a chance that they could request that you stop in for a visual inspection.
The card can be used on land as well as sea. It is also a government issued ID so it can be used at TSA screening points for airport security.
In order for your vessel or vehicle to clear using the Nexus card, all persons on board must have one. The cards have a cost of $50.00 and are good for five years. We simply filled out the applications on line, submitted them along with payment via visa card. Both governments run background checks on all persons applying. Once the application is approved you must go for a face to face interview at select locations. (the interview took less than 15 minutes) At the interview, they take your photo as well as fingerprints. After this, you will receive your card in the mail within seven to fifteen days. Total process takes about eight weeks.
It will be interesting to use it for the first time this summer. We will update whether there are any issues or not. Dave on Lobo has used one for years and loves it. Hopefully we will have the same experience.
