NMEA 2000 backbone location on 2017 R29

I have the same boat and recently attached AIS to the NMEA 2000 backbone.

Here is the location: Go down in the cave; you will see the AC air return and bulkhead; go over to starboard as far as you can; you will see a small panel which has to be removed; the backbone is there behind AC line insulation .

Mike is correct and if you need more access you remove the long teak shelf, then the carpeted overhead panel in the cave and then the fwd carpeted bulkhead (just a few screws each) then you will have much more access to the NM2000 backbone and easier to secure the additional elements.
Also then can find other items such as the water heater and Garmin compass.
Also more access to reach fwd towards the dash instrument wiring that comes aft through this section you have access to.
I have worked this area including all the Garmin goodies on the R29 a few times!
Contact me if you want?

Good luck!

Here are a few pics I found -
Look close at the first one with all the wires in the cramped space and you will see the NM2000 backbone mounted vertically on the left (inboard) side of the space.
Other pics are from the cave looking forward after the bulkhead panels removed.
See Water heater and other Garmin components.

I will post some pics of my recent major project upgrading Garmin dash components in the Ranger Tugs Technical Discussion section soon.

🙂
