So I am looking for a source for NMEA 2000 sending units for raw water flow and engine overheating and possible others. Has anyone installed these? Is this data already available through the Yanmar control system? The new plotter seems to have the ability to monitor these conditions as well as set up alarms. Rather than setting up separate systems I would like to use the NMEA if possible. Anybody done this or looking in to it as well? As usual the web offers lots of non related garbage for sale and no real information.

Many sensor readings are already on the NMEA 2000 bus- coolant temp, oil pressure, RPM, turbo boost, fuel flow, etc. I display coolant temp, oil pressure, fuel flow, and RPM as data blocks on the Garmin 5212 combination screen because the Yanmar/Teleflex display is so hard to read.

I have not seen a direct NMEA sensor for raw water flow, you would need to use a flow switch (such as the Aqualarm) and connect this to a NMEA 2000 switch sensor. It would be much cheaper/easier just to use the alarm panel from Aqualarm in this case.

If you want general purpose NMEA sensors you can look at Maretron. They have voltage, switch, temperature, and other types of sensor boxes. However, to configure these you would need to use a Maretron display (or Maretron USB/NMEA adapter and PC software), they use some NMEA 2000 extensions to configure the multi-channel boxes for things such as sensor names, etc.
