I'm considering buying a '09 R25 with a Cummins 150. Curious to hear from other owners how they feel about the noise level from the engine... is it tolerable? Anything you've done to mitigate it?

Also love to hear from other owners (with Yanmar, Volvo, etc.) how they feel about the noise level in general in the R25...

Thanks!

Have a 2010 with a Yanmar 150 and noise level is comparable. Here's some video of a Lake Erie trip that Just Dreamin', a 2009 RT with the Cummins joined us on. At 7 minutes and 30 seconds into the video there's some video taken within the closed cabin of the Yanmar powered boat and at 9 minutes and 35 seconds video from the Cummins boat that should give you an idea of the noise level with people talking. We don't find it to be annoying and have not added any sound proofing to the engine hatch. The video link is https://youtu.be/QCwCmd10R-M.

I added some high density rubber between engine and cabin but there are so many sound transmission considerations I expect I only achieved a slight decrement of sound transmission. Yes, I find the engine noise loud,( yanmar 150). But my diesel truck is worse, outboards are better (isolated, limited transmission points, engineered for STC ratings), sailboats are best.

This is a noise level recording I made for our 2010 R-25 (Classic). I used my iPhone's App Decibel 10 Pro with it placed on the dinette table.

There's no getting away from it.... the diesel engine is simply noisy. 😉

Noise level measurements
2010 R25 - Yanmar 4BY2-150
Mar 18, 2013
Calm and no wind
Cabin door closed
0 RPMs 50 dB
1000 RPMs 70 dB
1500 RPMs 75 dB
2000 RPMs 78 dB
2500 RPMs 83 dB (85dB door open)
3000 RPMs 87dB
3500 RPMs 93 dB
4000 RPMs 95 dB

All diesel models are not the same. The R25 classic engine extended partially under the cabin. For comparison, our R27 measures as follows.

2014 R27 Volvo D3-200
IPad App: "dB Meter"
all measurements in dB-A with IPad on helm dash and windows closed.

0 RPM 48 dB
1000 RPM 52 dB
1500 RPM 62 dB
2000 RPM 71 dB
2500 RPM 73 dB
3000 RPM 74 dB
3500 RPM 75 dB

Curt:

Yes, no doubt that the R-27/diesel noise level in the cabin is less than the 2010 R-25 (Classic). It makes a difference having more of the engine outside the cabin.

On our R-25 running at 3500 RPM conversation in the cockpit was almost impossible and one had to shout. Even inside the cabin at the helm running at 3500 RPM I had to raise my voice to be clearly heard by 1st Mate sitting on port side Nav seat.

One thing I found to reduce noise level in our R-25 was to ensure the beauty plates on the engine were secured tightly. The engine can setup some harmonics that cause the plates to vibrate and add to the noise levels.

The 75 dBA is equivalent to a vacuum cleaner running at a distance of some 10 feet so I've read. That to me is noisy.

With our new 2018 R-27/OB I do not need to raise my voice at all when communicating with anyone inside the cabin and that's with the cabin door open. I'm going to measure noise levels in our R-27/OB shortly and will post them here. In the cockpit for example it's no problem talking when underway which is a real bonus compared to our R-25.

What contributes to noise for the R-23 and the R-27 outboard models is not so much related to the engine noise but to wind and water slapping the hull when on plan. This of course happens when going at 20+ mph which the R-27 typically will not be going at.

I expect the noise level for the R-23 and R-27 outboard models will be less than any of the diesel powered RT boats from 0 to around 25 mph. At higher speeds for these two models the noise in the cabin is likely to be same as for the R-27 and other larger RT boats. However, at all speeds for the R-23 and R-27 outboard models conversation in the cockpit is possible without shouting.

Hi Baz,

Yes, it will be interesting to get your readings with your new boat. From your description I would expect it may be in the 65 to 70 dB range. We do not have to shout at all at 3500 rpm on our boat but we do have to turn up the Fusion music or radio a fair bit to hear it. It is really not too bad but I do wish it was even quieter. We do often run at that rpm, however, for the full trip and it is really not a problem. Above 3500 rpm it starts to bother me but we don't often run there.

Our 2014 25SC has a Volvo Penta D3-150 and the noise dose not seem loud to us with the rear door closed. We previously has a 2012 22 CDory with a Honda 90 outboard and that was definitely louder at cruise with the rear door closed. We did not measure the noise level, just going by ear. The D3-150 has a max rpm of 3000 so we are normally cruising at 2600 to 2700 rpm. The lower rpm of the VP may make the difference.
