You can purchase the oil filter for the 4BY2 engine on Amazon. I just purchased 2. Changed my oil this evening. Hauling Saturday.

Are these good/correct for the Yanmar 4BY2-150 engine ?
I ask as there's also the Yanmar 4BY2-180 that some R-27 have.

What engine model do you have as I see that you have the R-27 model.

Thanks... 🙂

Baz,
As far as I know the 4BY2 -150 and the 4BY2-180 are the same engine. The added horse power is done by computer entry. As far as the oil filter goes, that number is correct on the previous post. I have yet to find the primary fuel filter or the secondary fuel filters on Amazon.

Thanks Mike for confirming. 🙂

For anyone who may be interested, I was able to get a secondary filter from this company at a very competitive price with shipping. I am only posting this because I know Ranger has had issues trying to get parts from Yanmar. So for those who are in need of parts immediately may want to try here. I think that they can only ship to certain areas, but they have them listed on the site. http://www.j-wayent.com/.

Mike, thank you for this source. You mentioned a secondary filter.....is this one of the fuel filters for the Yanmar?

Jim

Jim,
Yes, terminology sometimes gets confusing. The secondary filter is the one mounted to the engine. It is larger than the one on the port bulkhead.

How do I change the cartridge on my 4BY2 oil filter?

I got the cap off - a significant project since it was so tight - but I can't see how to get the cartridge off the filter.

Seems like another unnecessary complication.

Thanks /Stu

Yes removing it can be a struggle. What I learned by accident was put the pointed end of the stem on a couple of rags on a hard surface and push down on the element, it should pop off. The top of the element clicks in under the cap. I have actually separated the stem from the cap by pulling so hard. I thought I broke it but it just clicks in under the cap. Be sure the new filter clicks in and be sure to torque the cap per specs in the manual.

The 6by takes a BMW filter and with the same number on the Yanmar filter and the BMW filter. Please post the 4by Yanmar number and I can confirm if it is the same filter.

There has to be a better way than brute force. I've pulled has hard as a can, bupkis...

Anyone have a good trick? As it is, this is a $250 oil change - oil, fuel, and air filter (the last mechanic stepped on it and broke the old one.

Maybe someone a lot stronger than me? I'll mail you the cap . . .

How about the "O" rings? Do they come with the filter.

thanks - frustration where none is needed.

The Yanmar oil filter for the 4BY2is 165000-69520

Now, if I could only figure out how to get it off.

Seem to be running two threads on this simultaneously, but:

My experience has been that it can be hard to remove the filter off the shaft. I usually place the entire assembly in a large plastic zip lock. I them sit the pointed end on a hard surface, grasp the filter cartridge and push down hard. It will then release and you can slide the cartridge off the rest of the way.
hope this helps.

Does anyone happen to know which of the BMW oil filter caps are equivilant to the Yanmar 165000-69510 cap specified in the parts manual.

The Yanmar part looks not much like the one I removed - and I've ordered this BMW replacement from Amazon.

https://www.amazon.com/Dorman-917-0...1485109412&sr=8-3&keywords=bmw+oil+filter+cap

It will at least get me back on the water, but I'd like to get the right one.

As you know, Yanmar restricts who can sell authorized parts in Florida - and the Florida authorized parts place I've contacted mumble about the supply chain and tell me it will be "very expensive"

Also, if anyone knows the BMW equivalent of the air filter part, I'd like to replace the one the last mechanic stepped on and cracked.

thanks much - getting closer.

I just received a MANN HU 722 z - as suggested above. It is about twice the size of the filter that came off the boat.

It may be right, the old one was clipped into a filter cover that was nothing like the one in the photo.

Guess I'll get a cover suited to this filter and see if it fits.

The cap on Amazon does look like the one on my Yanmar.. That comes with the lower O rings installed. You need the larger O ring for the cap, should come with the filter or reuse the old one if you have to. I would definetly keep an eye on this for any oil leaks.
As far as the air filter you have to go through Yanmar as far as I know. $152.75 from J-Way http://www.mcssl.com/store/j-wayenterpr ... by2-150180
The air filter can be cleaned with a K&N air filter cleaning kit multiple times.

Stu:

I've used the Mann HU 722 Z on our 2012 R27 Yanmar power Ranger Tug. It is a filter element that fits inside of an oil canister on the port side of our engine. On ours the Mann was the same size as the original Yanmar filter. I wonder if Yanmar changed the oil filter style or do you have a Volvo engine?

Jim,

Thanks for the reply.

My oil filter cap has an insert that goes into the center of the oil filter - as I'm sure yours does from looking at the Yanmar parts diagram for the 4BY2 that the nameplate says is in my engine.

I'm guessing that a P.O. (probably his/her mechanic, unknown to the P.O) busted the cap by removing it with a channel lock - the one I removed was buggered up fairly badly.

The old cap has a much shorter filter that was held in place by a plastic thing that defies description.

I'll take a photo and have ordered a cap - most likely the correct cap fits the correct filter that I also ordered based on the advice above.

This engine was based on a BMW - does anyone know the BMW model number of the base engine? Or what car it was used in?

Thanks again for all the advice. /Stu

In all cases you can click on the image to see more detail.

The image shows the as removed filter with hair, crime, and stuff that should not be in oil.

The new Mann HU 722 z from Amazon is beside the original cartridge - I didn't initially realize the cartridge went up into the cap.

The new cartridge installed quite easily after removing the old one. I wrapped the mess in several paper towels and slammed the point with some vigor onto a surface covered by more paper towels. Tried tapping it gently a few times before hauling into the slam.

This is the box from the replacement cartridge - available for $11 from Amazon or $46 from Yanmar. I suspect, but can't prove, the Yanmar cartridge keeps my beer cooler.

I decided to lookup the BMW part number printed on the 4BY2 oil filter supplied by Yanmar, BMW 11427787697.

I found an auto parts store selling this BMW filter for $18.26 plus shipping. In the pictures it looks just like what came in the Yanmar box right down to the O-Ring for the cap and the washer that we never use.
