Oil and Fuel Filters

Back to the original question... On the 6by engine the oil filter is available at a BMW dealer. In fact the number on the top of the Yanmar filter is the same as the the number on the top of the BMW filter. So take that no. to a bimmers parts counter. The cost here in Cdn $ was 25.

R Baker, I also have a R-29 with a 6BY2-260 Yanmar and need to replace the oil filter but am having some trouble getting the parts number since I don't have access to my boat right now. Can you give me the number for either the Yanmar or BMW replacement. From reading Tugnuts it sounds like the BMW is the way to go. Thanks for the help, Ted Bowler - Southern Ca.

I'm on my boat, changing my oil right now. The Yanmar "element, oil filter" part number is 165000-69590.

I went to the BMW dealer to get a filter for my 6BY2-260. The part number 165000-69590 didn't fit their numbering scheme. Does anyone have a part number for the filter element on the 6BY2-260? Is it the same filter as used on the 4 BY?

Update: Nevermind. I'm a bad forum searcher! I found the BMW part number in another post 11-42-7-788-460

The oil fill cap on my 4BY2 is leaking oil. Not the filter! The place oil should go in.

The fill cap gasket is a strange thing - and the local dealer no longer sells Yanmar 4BY2 Parts.

Any idea where I can order a Yanmar OIL FILL cap - the square thing on top on the engine? thanks.

Hi Stu,
I looked up the part numbers. The Cap/cover is 165000-71020, the gasket is 165000-68020. Do an internet search on the part numbers and you may come up with something. How about going through Mastry Engines in FL?

I had planned to call Mastry in the morning. None of the usual places I look up part numbers list internal parts for the 4BY any longer. I guess there aren't many around and apparently it is no longer available.

I plan to call on Monday - and visit the local parts store this afternoon.

Any idea if BMW put the engine in any of their production automobiles? if so, it should be easy to find an oil filler cap gasket -- I'm not sure if the cap itself is damaged.

I see no signs of excessive blow-by if I run the hot engine with the cap off - so I'm guessing it is just oil being thrown on the cap by the timing chain located just below the opening.

Thanks for the tip.

As expected, Mastry Marine, the South Florida Yanmar distributor, won't sell me the needed Oil Fill cap and gasket. They only sell to dealers.

Anyone know of a mail order place that will risk violation of Yanmar rules and sell parts to a mortal, real live, boater?

It is hard enough owning an orphan engine without an openly hostile dealership network to back them up. /Stu

Mastry can’t refer you to a dealer in their territory?

Thank you. I’m in Delray Beach. Really looking to mail order. I’ll call them and see if they will ship.

Easier to buy an AR-15 than a Yanmar part.
