Oil Drip on Yanmar 260

I am having a persistent oil leak from the turbo opening which saturates the air filter and then drips on to the transmission.
Took me a while to track it down as is very slow...maybe a drip or two over a 6-8 hour cruising day. Obviously a seal or the like is leaking inside the turbo housing very slowly. Of course, I am not going to strip down the turbo up here in the middle of nowhere. Am having no other performance issues or noises.

Just wondering if you turbo diesel experts out there have any comments about the concerns I should have. We will be making our way down to Campbell River this week so presumably I can find a certified mechanic to take a look, but I have many hours of cruising before I get there.

Will appreciate any comments. I will have internet service thru Sunday noon.

Hi,

I have the 150 and had the same problem. There is a small hose that runs from the back side of the turbo to a vacuum actuator that is even with and forward of the turbo. The hose would slide off the turbo and oil would spray onto the air filter and then drip down onto the tranny. In order to see this hose you need to get down low in the bilge, bend your back 180 degrees, turn your neck 180 degrees the other way and you're looking right at it. Or you can remove the air filter and it is a little easier to get to.

When you pull the air filter off the turbo there is a oil residue on the turbo fan blades and maybe a drip or two on the bottom of the blade housing.
I am also not sure at this point if this is normal. My wife said that it is not normal for a airplane turbo to have oil on it. But she also said that they burn at a much higher temp and it may burn off.
If anyone does call yanmar I would love to here there response to this.

Yes, that describes the oil source exactly. On long runs it is just enough to drip down thru the bottom of the filter. I just put some absorbant pads beneath to catch the drip, just one or two every few hours of operation.
I will call a Yanmar service center when I have Phone access during open hours.

I just talked to a Yanmar service center and they said that they do see a little oil on the turbo of the 260 6YB2. It is normal to see a very little.
Like I said earlier, I would pull my filter and find a little residue on the turbo blades and maybe a drip on the bottom of the fan blade housing. Not much.
So if anyone is experiencing more oil then that then I would be concerned and would look into it further.
It also helps to keep your K&N air filter clean. For anyone that does not know you can get a cleaning kit/recharge kit for the filter at any auto parts store. I spray mine with the cleaning solution and then powerwash it clean. Let it dry fully and then put two coats of the red spray oil that comes with the kit. Re-install and you are good to go! My Dodge has the same set up so I do this all the time. After cleaning the filter I can really hear the turbo on the dodge whistle. What a cool sound!
