Has anyone found a cross reference for a Yanmar filter for the 6-BY2-260 ? I have been checking around Victoria for one and the Yanmar ones are from $65 - $ 89 depending where you call... These prices are just crazy for a $14.00 filter.
Any help is much appreciated, If I get a cross referance manufacturer and part number I can track one down and get it sent here

Are you talking the primary or secondary. I searched for a secondary for my 4BY2 and found one from fram. I have not used it. My intitial observation was that it was not made as well as the Yanmar. It was also lighter. I have been trying to find out if it has the same filtering qualities, but have not been able to find that information. As far as a primary goes I am pretty sure there will be one available from Racor.

I intended to keep the old filter for comparison, but, alas did not. The plan was to compare filters at a BMW dealer. The filter for the 3 litre diesel looked very similiar. The number the parts guy gave me is 11 427 788 460 . So if you have an old filter to compare...

Thanks .. I'll try that number here... I'm going to purchase a gold plated one and take it around to compare.. Once I get a good number for BMW I can cross reference to multiple sources..

I think you are talking about the fuel filter attached to the block? If so there are historical posts talking about this issue in detail. The bottom line is I have never found one after lots of looking and, there is supposedly magic filter paper in the factory filter that prevents rust in the injectors. The last quote on this fuel filter I received from my local dealer was $120.00 so I am looking for other sources. It should be replaced yearly or every 250 hours I believe. Perhaps in Canada with the depreciated currency?

No it is not a fuel filter , It is the oil filter which is just actually a paper element. The fuel filters are equally expensive though, I will deal with them at a latter date.

I've installed a Racor fuel filter with a clear bowl on the bottom. This is replacing the first fuel filter and is ahead of the fuel filter on the block. Racor filters are about $15 and the second filter can be ignored, although I'll carry a spare for the second location on the block just to be safe. I've done a similar set up on a previous dodge truck with great success.

I'm considering going to a remote oil filter kit and then using a large spin on filter similar to my cummins in my truck. The BMW filter is a scam. Relocating the oil filter to a more accessible location would nicer on my aging body too! I installed a remote oil filter on the fender of my sports car and there are no issues.

Now if I could install a draft beer tap in my engine bay regular maintenance would be much more pleasurable!

Good idea, as long as the filters are the same micron's should not be an issue

Don't ignore the second filter on the block. It has finer filtration and protects the injectors from minute particles that may not be filtered out from your primary filter.

Ok Yanmar OIL filter is exactly the same filter ( same numbers on filter same everything ) as BMW 11-42-7-788-460
Retail price $26.99 CDN ....always ask for dicount or "trade " pricing at any dealer, and you should get some discount I ended up at $24.54 plus tax
There is also a similar filter offered by Fram... I'm sure it will work but is not the exact same for $18.95 .. I will keep it for emergency...Personally I will stick with the BMW part as it is the same just not in a Yanmar box

I just cross referenced the BMW for the number you gave for a Mann filter, it is an HU 721/4 X. I use the Mann filter for my 4BY2-180. The Mann filter for the 4BY2 is HU 722 Z. Never had an issue

The price for the Mann was the same, when I looked on line. I would like to see one to be sure. The BMW / Yanmar has like a rubber embedded gasket at the end. The Fram I got had like a fiber instead of the rubber, I'm pretty sure it is not an issue but just in case I am going to stick with the BMW for the little price difference , as it is the same.
