Maiden voyage in our 2011 Ranger 29 Classic with Yanmar 6BY2 260 HP

We left Port Angeles at about 9:30 AM and landed in Port Townsend around 12:45 and the trip was uneventful, almost!

First event….

We were cruising at about 3000 - 3500 RPM and we slowed down to a stop to take a couple of pictures and the Yanmar information panel on the dash started flashing & beeping low oil pressure.
I bumped the throttle, and all was good.
When we arrived at the marina I slowed down to get into neutral and once again the low oil pressure warning started flashing & beeping again, after a few seconds it stopped.

So, I didn’t know if you are cruising and slow down to a stop to fast if this is what happens, I sure wouldn’t think so.

The second event….
Once we got tied up and turned off the engine something started making a loud noise so I lifted up the inside hatch cover and a little pump with a gauge was making all sorts of noise and then stopped, a few minutes later it started again and a few minutes later it stopped.

I attached a picture of the noisy pump thing, well I tried it's now in our photo album.

So our R 29 is in Port Townsend getting some new electronics including the new Garmin 8616 xsv and we can’t wait to get back and start cruising.

I wish all of our Tugnut friends good health in these crazy times.

Dave

The noisy pump looks like an air compressor, but I have no idea what it is for. Where does the black hose from it lead?

Our 2012 R29 sometimes loses oil pressure at low speeds, but never enough to sound an alarm.

Some of the other owners with the same engine as yours will chime in but it's not unusual for oil pressure to momentarily drop below the alarm level if you slow down all the way to idle after running hard. It helps to drop down to 1000 rpm or so and hold it there for a few minutes to let the oil cool a bit.

Never saw that type pump on a Ranger. Possibly added by the previous owner. Is there a water accumulator to keep water pressure consistent? As far as oil pressure goes. There was a service bulletin that addressed this. Was that"fix" done on your boat? It involves a ground wire going from the oil sensor to the paddle wheel lead in the harness and an update to the software. If that was done it could be your oil sensor. Usually the oil pump is not the culprit.

Dave, Just a wild guess but maybe a oil transfer pump? If you can trace the black and red wires is there a switch? Your picture only has one hose on the discharge side (exhaust) is there a intake hose?
And if so can you trace it ? Where does the discharge hose go?
I know more questions than answers but hopefully you can solve yourself!
Good luck. Bob

After looking at your photo in your album a second time, I see a relief valve on the exhaust which would indicate a air compressor of some sort, maybe for cleaning or maintenance, once you find the switch and placed in the off position I'm sure the noise will go away!

Do you have an air driven tugboat whistle? I had one on my 2011 R29 installed by the previous owner and it had a similar pump which would run to keep pressure up for the whistle.

I have a small compressor, connected to an air tank that drives a tug boat whistle installed by the original owner. The compressor is under the head sink, tank under galley sink, Extra ‘horn’ switch at helm with brass whistle just forward of stack on the roof. It took me a month to figure out how to work it. Compressor has a small lever near the gauge the turns it on/off. I don’t use it much, as the whistle is a bit too high pitched for my taste. I’m exploring the possibility of chi
Angling the orifice on the whistle to change the pitch. Otherwise the compressor remains off 98% of the time.

I think I figured out the noisy pump with a gauge on it. On the side of the pump it says Kahlenberg and model # P569-01 so I looked up the name and Kahlenberg makes air horns.
On the top of the boat there is a little brass colored whistle that sounds like a "flute" I am thinking it supplies air to this.
I'll try contacting Kahlenberg and ask them how I should proceed.

Regarding the oil pressure alarm I can't see that being normal because if it were people would eventually not check, so I am thinking it maybe a oil pressure sending unit or something like that.

Thank you for getting back to me.

Dave

Regarding the low oil pressure alarm,
I do not know if the "fix" was done.
I'll try to find out about the service bulletin pertaining to oil pressure.
Thanks for the input.
