Onan genset broken oil dipstick

Hi everyone. Went to check the oil in my Onan 5KW genset the other day and the dipstick broke, leaving about the bottom quarter of the dipstick jammed in the oil filler tube. I am not able to reinsert what's left of the dipstick to secure the cap. The genset is currently unusable.

It is devilishly hard to snake these very long dipsticks through the oil filler neck, making routine oil inspections a real pain. I suspect that the repeated flexing of the dipstick may have weakened it.

Has anyone else experienced this issue? Any advice on how to fix?

I had the same thing happen.

It's a known issue with Onan/Cummins. I had mine fixed under warranty by replacing the tube. Everything works fine now.

The warranty is for 5 years.

That’s really good to know! I will contact my Onan service center first thing Monday to get this fixed.

Didn’t realize it was a five year warranty. Thought it was one year. Very reassuring. Now if I could just find an Onan service center in SW FL that doesn’t have a seven week backlog!

I’ve already had a warranty service on this genset with only 14 hours on it. A diesel fuel leak from the fuel filter housing was attributed to a manufacturing defect. Took me over eight weeks to get that repaired. No generator = no AC during Florida summer.. not good! ☹️
