Subject: Opening & Closing the R-21EC's transom storage lids

Do others find opening the transom storage lids is kind of awkward in that one has to curl a finger or two around the lids outer edge near the sidewalls for lifting and for closing, and in doing so, the fingers get squeezed between the lids edge and the side walls and can in fact hurt some ? My lids align closely with the side walls so I have to place my finger under the lids edge from the front rather than the sides. The water gutter in that location provides room for this. When closing the lid I always find myself grabbing the lid's edge and lowering and invariably get my fingers squeezed between the lids edge and the side wall when the lid is almost closed down.

To me, a small 1" hole near to the lids edge with rounded edges top/bottom would be more comfortable and easier for lifting and lowering the lids. Just pass the index finger into the hole and lift up or lower down the lid. The anchor locker lid on the R-25 has such a hole and it sure made lifting that lid easy and without finger being squeezed. 🙂

Hmmm...I agree they are awkward to open and close. Hadn't thought about the finger hole, but if it worked with your R25, then maybe it's an easy fix.

I agree the lids are awkward but I like that they are large to allow easier access to the compartment.

The storage area under the seat is a WET area already (from spray or rain), so I would not want to create another opening for water to enter.

Dave: I was wondering about the wet issue and thus the hole modification would not be desirable as you've mentioned.

How about making a half hole at the outboard edge of each lid. This would provide more room for ones finger to curl under the lid for opening and lowering and still not allow a direct path for water into the storage area. Any water running off the lid near the half hole on the lid's edge would run off and down into the water gutter.

I will certainly hold off making any kind of holes in the two lids until I've experienced and understand the water issue.

CAPTCRUNCH: That's a good solution. Thanks. 🙂 I quite likely can live with the current situation for myself but I know my 1st Mate will have difficulties as well as grand kids who want to explore all the nooks and crannies in the boat. I don't want to hear my grand kids yell like a cut dog when they get their little fingers squeezed/crushed.

I hope it turns out well. In my life, sticking an index finger in a relatively tight hole when the finger and the hole are subject to unexpected movement would be risking a broken or dislocated finger.
