Opening Day of Boating Seattle

Sorry the log boom is where spectators tie up their boats to watch the opening day parade. I was just saying that you can always tie your boat to the log boom on Friday night if and then head back over to the Seattle Yacht Club in the morning to meet up for the parade. Sounds like you guys have space reserved at SYC so you should be good there. If they run out of room then the log boom or other options I listed are good places to spend the night. Sorry for the super long posts, but I had the same questions last year, and thought I'd chime in to help out.
 
Just a quick status check: 1. Has anyone heard from SYC about dock Zero moorage????? 2. How many boats are we going to have???? Just curious.... By the way, how strict is ballard about having 50ft lines for transit????? I don't have that much and really hate the thought of buying special lines I may never need again...My 25' do just fine! 😛 Look forward to meeting everyone.

Drew --- The lock masters will hate me for saying this but I had a set of 50x3/8 lines at the ready for well over 20 years but never once used them. The 50 footers are for if you are "on the wall" in the large lock. With a 25 foot boat you will probably be assigned to the small lock. There they have floating walls with bollards (mushrooms) on them. Each bollard has a number and the lock man will call down to you a number to put your line on. Cleat one end of your line to your boat and then put the line around the bollard and the bring the other end back to your boat and cleat it off. Do not uncleat the lines until the lock man tells you to. There is a heavy current just after the gates open. If you are directed to the large lock you will most likely be told to tie up to a larger boat that is on the wall. The same tie-up procedure is used with the other boat as used with the floating wall in the small lock. The trick to the large lock is not to be in any hurry. If there is a larger boat near you, let it go in first.

Good morning...Kind of what I figured...Appreciate the input and think I will put the purchase price of new line towards buying more beer and champagne to celebrate with my fellow owners! Look forward to seeing everyone up there. Spoke with andrew the other day and he said he was going to be wearing chaps...yes chaps for the parade....Who ever is behind little toot, beware!

Opening day update. We have signed up for up to 15 boats. Right now it looks like there will be 9 boats in the parade. If anyone would like to join us there is still time. It is going to be a lot of fun and we would love to have you along. Here are the details. The opening day parade instructions are now available at http://www.seattleyachtclub.org/OpeningDay We will all meet in Portage Bay on Saturday morning around 9:00 A.M. We must all be in the assembly area by 9:40 before they close Montlake cut. I received confirmation this morning that everyone that had requested moorage is signed up for Dock 0. Our class is U (decorated commercial). We are one of the last classes to go through the parade. Order.htm/ Once the parade is over we will all go back through the cut and return to Dock 0 for trophy presentations and closing ceremonies. Queen City Yacht Club is having a burger bash for $8.00 on Saturday night from 1800-2030 Burger Bash $ 8.00 2030-2400 Beer and Wine – Upper Deck 2030-2330 Dancing to “Tropics” – Upper Deck There is a shuttle boat that runs from Seattle Yacht Club to Queen City Yacht Club Water Shuttle to SYC Hours: Friday Noon-0100 Sat. 0800-0100 Sun 0800-Noon Please take a minute to read the parade instructions. Here are a few of the highlights. We are all registered under Ranger Tugs. I will have a 2009 Opening Day boat number for each of you to display on your boat. One of the numbers will need to be displayed on the starboard bow as close to the stem as possible and the other number will need to be displayed on the transom. If you have a dingy then it will need to be displayed on the bottom of the dinghy facing aft. The parade director will be using CH. 68. All boats competing for awards must pass through Montlake Cut (West to East), and within view of the judges. Judges will be anchored in the reviewing line, and will be clearly identified. Each skipper will execute a Right Hand Salute upon arriving at the first reviewing boat (Old Man IV, Admiral of the Day) holding salute until past the third review boat (SYC Commodore). Do not salute with the American Flag (don't dip the flag).

Whew!

Didn't know that they could fit that many boats in Union Bay! This was our first time at the Seattle Yacht Club Opening Day parade. Michelle & Drew on R-Dragon, Laurie & John on the Laurie Ann and Linda & I on Island Ranger joined up with the 4 Factory Boats and participated. The Factory team did an incredible decoration job - and won first place in the class.

It was great to cruise with other R-25s - but Dock O was crazy! Hope everyone got back home safely.

The shots I took of the 6 Ranger Tugs ahead of me didn't turn out so great. The back ends don't show much - except of course the R-29 - but I was too far away.

I talked with John today - he said someone took a video of us during the parade, and he will figure out a way to share it.

Well just so everyone knows, my boss had demanded me to do this. (I would have done it anyways) I am all about the "shock factor" when it comes to seeing my ranger tug customers. I will never forget the look on Mac's face when he had seen my dew! By the way Howard, I still have the mohawk covered nicely by my hat if you would like to take some more sneaky photos and post them on tugnuts! :lol:
