Well, they have set August 9th, but nothing said to this point about how recreational boats will work the vaccine + covid test protocol.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/20 ... rder-open/

Fingers crossed they will get this worked out and those of us wanting to venture north (safely, of course) will be allowed to do so.

It is confusing. You do need proof of vaccinations. It does look like you need their ArriveCAN ap. But, you can only enter trips 3 days out. What is confusing for marine entry is a requirement to get tested upon entering. That could be challenging by boat.
https://travel.gc.ca/travel-covid

Will the first person on this forum from the USA going into Canada by boat please keep us posted on how you managed the pre and post entry Covid testing requirements?
We have Nexus but assume we would have to physically report into a Canadian customs site to cross.

Looks like we won't be going to Canada this year.
We are not vaccinated and will not be so we'll stay in WA waters!

Thanks for the heads up

Our most enjoyable use of our boat, and one of the biggest reasons from moving from a 24 ft fast boat to a 25 ft Ranger Tug six years ago, was to continue to explore the Canadian side of the PNW. From the Gulf Islands to the Broughtons, that’s definitely where we would prefer to cruise.
Our Plan B for early September, a 16-20 day cruise up to Desolation Sound, may have just switched to Plan A for us. Just hoping CBSA gets the rules for private boats clarified by then. Taking the COVID test 72 hours before entry should not be too difficult. Just not sure how ArriveCAN dovetails with Nexus.
Don’t mind if there’s not a huge surge of American boats heading up there in September. That actually sounds nice!

On Monday Hamster directed us to the travel.gc.ca site. The section "Transit through Canadian Waters" in the document entitled, "Travel Restrictions in Canada", says that "at this time" and "currently" you can not enter Canadian waters unless transiting. Whether that extends to August 9 is unclear. The link to "small vessel reporting sites" refers to the situation as at July 5, not August 9. Very confusing.

At the linked page, the first thing it says is the changes starting August 9th, with links to the News Release. Still confusing about testing on entry, or for me, just going across the border to fish.

Darn it,
I read a report in the news today that our President has upset the applecart with a unilateral choice to keep our border closed to visitors ,despite the Messaging from Tudeau. So progress is probably going to remain stalled for folks in Point Roberts, and travelers that want to enjoy late summer in Canada.

Regarding testing requirements on entry, the Canadian public health news says "Using a new border testing surveillance program at airports and land crossings, fully vaccinated travellers will not need a post-arrival test unless they have been randomly selected to complete a Day 1 COVID-19 molecular test."

https://www.canada.ca/en/public-health/ ... of-th.html

So, my reading of that is the vaccinated can go to Canada on August 9th with the ArriveCAN app and a negative COVID test three days prior to entry.

That’s how I read it
Except now I’m reading our president is unilaterally choosing to keep our side of the border closed, for his own reasons. It seems contrary to science, ie CDC and WHO recommendations
I’ll keep my fingers crossed that his advisors can help him see the value of working with the Canadians plans

This is not how this works.

US citizens (and usually green card holders) can always return back home. So if Canada lets you in, the US will let you back.

That’s how it works now: since Canada changed its rules for citizens on July 5, all my Canadian/US dual citizen friends have been going up to visit family in BC; they have no problem coming home.

Canada's border is opening 9th August for Air Travellers only. Land and sea border will still remained closed, unless transiting through Canadian waters to reach Alaska.

I've already spoken with Marina who received requests from USA boaters post-9 August and some, not all, are not taking these reservations.

That being, a friend of mine at CBSA did indicate that if attempting to clear Canadian Customs and sea-travellers cannot proof that they will be transiting to Alaska (or get reported as not transiting to Alaska), fines and potential bans (up to 1 year) from entering Canada (at all borders), will be issued.

You can take your chances or just stay south of the border. That you believe or not in this pandemic or the validity of vaccinations, that's your right. Your civic responsibility is to not endanger a population that, in general, is upwards of 50% vaccinated, especially in the Gulf Islands, where medical facilities cannot support/sustain illnesses cases above the local population.

What a confusing thread,
This is one of the last bullet points from the public health agency of Canada linked in a previous post:

Travellers arriving in Canada by marine mode will now be eligible for eased quarantine and testing requirements if they have received the full series of a vaccine - or combination of vaccines - accepted by the Government of Canada at least 14 days prior to entering Canada. Currently, those vaccines are manufactured by Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, AstraZeneca/COVISHIELD, and Janssen (Johnson & Johnson). They must also meet all other critieria, including the pre-entry test requirement and the need to submit information electronically through ArriveCAN before or when entering Canada. This is to accommodate for Wi-Fi issues on the water. All travellers must still provide a quarantine plan and be prepared to quarantine, in case it is determined at the border that they do not meet the necessary requirements.

Go figure.

I actually think that's quite clear. You get vaccinated with a Canadian approved vaccine at least two weeks before you intend to enter. You get a test within the required period before entry. You enter this information, together with a quarantine plan (in case it is determined at the border that you are a risk) in the app. You presumably get an indication that your information has been received and if so you make the crossing and present yourself as you usually would. There are random tests done at the border (like random security selection at an airport).

Whether it's a good idea is up to you. If you do happen to be deemed a risk at the border and must quarantine that could ruin your whole day.

Can the quarantine plan be as simple as "Turn around and go back to The States?"

To add a bit more confusion, the Waggoner Cruising Guide says in a post titled, “Border Open by Land and Air — Not by Sea” that the the rules haven’t changed for boats and Canada ports of entry may not be set up by August 9 to accommodate boats. No word yet on when that might happen.

Sorry for starting this very confusing thread. But the confusion pretty accurately reflects conditions. Not sure if the Canadian government is ready for us vaccinated Americans to pour across the border en mass. As in all things covid, patience is both a virtue and a strategy. Hang in there! We will see this beautiful cruising ground—one of the best in the world—when they are ready for us.
