I'm nearly finished outfitting my new R 31 before an extended trip. I wonder what folks have done to mount an outboard motor on the rail. All the mounts I've found expect two parallel rails or, a T mount, one horizontal bar and a vertical one right below the middle. My rails don't have this configuration. The motor is a little 2.5 Yamaha which weighs about 37 lbs if that matters.

Best,

Bob

I just finished making one out of 1" Starboard. There isn't one commercially that has the proper configuration. Although the $25.00 one with just one 1" slot across the top does work. Soon as you tighten the motor onto the mount it doesn't spin. If you have the desire and the ability to make one, PM me and I'll send a sketch and pictures. You need basic woodworking tools and skills. I bought a scrap piece of Starboard from a shop for $15.00. It's 8" x 12".

I just installed one I bought from Defender Marine, made by Johnson I think. Although it is made for the T connection it works fine with only the one rail. I am going to pad the spot where the outboard (3.5 Tohatsu) hits the rub rail and use a bungie to a side support to keep it from moving when not on the dinghy. It was on sale, think I paid $12.

I made a mount using 5/4 pressure treated decking extending high enough above the cockpit rail so I could fasten the motor and long enough to reach over the rub rail. I fastened it to the top cockpit rail using SS u-bolts and removed a screw from the rub rail and then used a longer screw to go through the board and then back into the same rub rail hole. Three years and it looks like new.

Thanks for the suggestions folks!

Best,

Bob

Saw this v-lock mounting system at a local boat show. From the web site - www.v-lock.com - it appears to work for motors and many other items.

Thanks Peter. This is a gem!

Hi Mike, I just today read through this thread and wonder if your device would be appropriate for mounting a 5hp putboard ocassionally (normally on dinghy) off our swim platform to use as emergency backup propulsion should we ever have trouble and need to get to a service center? Thanks.

Weaver Industries in Idaho makes a nice, detachable transom for the swim platform. It's called the "Moto Sto" and shows only as a storage system on their web page, but they do modify it for use as a removable transom.
