I have noticed several R21 tugs with outboards mounted on a stern bracket. What are they mainly used for? Trolling, to get-home if the Yanmar quits, power for a dinghy, other ...

I installed a detachable transom on the swim platform of my R27, and I carry a Honda 4 cycle, 5 HP outboard on the boat to provide backup power if needed ( the coolant hose and oil line problems were an incentive) as well as for slow trolling. Fortunately I made this improvement a week before my oil line broke, about 14 miles from the dock.

I do not believe I need a trolling motor or a trolling valve for my R21-EC. I can do 1.5 knots in slow speed. As far as needing a trolling motor as a backup, that is why I have a BoatUS card, and do not need the added expense of an extra motor. Now, if I had an outboard motor for a dinghy, that is a different story. So far, I have not read of anyone having a problem with the 3YM30's. If you look on the sailboat forums, the early 3YM30's had overheating problems, but that issue has been fixed. I have not seen any other issues for the 3YM30 on any forum. Pretty reliable motor.

When on an extended trip, I put a 5 hp outboard on the spring-loaded mount of the Red Ranger, an R-21 EC.

I have used it for trolling, when the Yanmar can't go slow enough. But I also have used it in choppy seas while halibut fishing. It provided better control in terms of maintaining a desired speed in rough seas than the Yanmar did.

I also use the outboard for a dingy that I tow on those extended trips.

Is there any small diesel outboards anyone has seen, Would prefer to not add gasoline storage to my list of things on the Ranger
Thank you

I think the Russians used to make one....3 hp and about 300 lbs. 😱

There are some propane outboards on the market that rum off the little green 1lb bottles and can also be attached to a 20-lb tank. If you already have a propane grill.....

Take a look at the Torqeedo electric outboards. I use the Travel 1003 for my dinghy. It is equivalent to a 3 HP gas outboard. At lower power settings the endurance on one charge is impressive, many hours. It came with a 110VAC charger but you can make a cable to charge from 12VDC.

Yanmar makes a 27hp 3 cylinder, tiller controlled diesel outboard that will run on kerosene or biodiesel, too. They sold for around $8000 in 1998. Totally cool, but mostly used in South America and Asia. I read about a guy who when 3,000 miles across open ocean when his primary 180hp ending failed during a circumnavigation. He used a fuel made of soybean oil! Another guy used two on a 35' multihull across the Pacific burning 385 gallons for a 2,250 mile leg to Hawaii. I believe they still make the D27 and a D36 model (27/36hp). eBay has a D27 for $15,000, year unreported, but called the "last generation" so maybe they are on the way out or done with.

Here's a ton of pictures about various diesel outboards: http://www.google.com/search?q=dies...L4am6gHSrPmaAw&ved=0CJwBELAE&biw=1021&bih=500

Check out this 2hp unit:

Here's an importer for 2hp through 5hp engines; I wonder what they cost? Is a 5hp big enough to serve as an emergency secondary engine for an R25? http://lfpower.en.alibaba.com/produ..._Outboard_motors_2hp_2_6hp_3_5hp_4hp_5hp.html
