Glad that you enjoyed the Pacific Northwest and that your shakedown cruise was successful. Please don't tell anyone else about the weather you encountered. It is always like that, but we have an image to maintain.

Pete is also correct about both of us learning new things. After years of enjoying rides on everyone else's new boat - I was finally convinced it was time for an upgrade. Linda & I have decided to trade in Island Ranger, and will take delivery of a 2013 R-27. It will be hard to say goodbye to Island Ranger - we've had wonderful experiences. But now we are having trouble waiting, our new R 27 will be named Passage Weaver and we've already pencilled in passages to the Sea of Cortez, and back up the Inside Passage. Can't wait!

Accordingly, I've changed my TugNut log in from Island Ranger to CaptMac

Some of you know the story of how we came to buy Island Ranger. It was at the Seattle Boat show when I was shopping for an upgrade from our C-Dory "Two Lucky Fish". Linda saw the Ranger 25 and said "if you buy that, I'll go with you to Alaska". I couldn't pass that opportunity by, so we bought Island Ranger and we left for Alaska 4 months later. This time it was Linda who said " I want to cruise the Sea of Cortez" and I said I wanted just a slight upgrade to do so. I said "if we buy a new R-27 I'll go with you to the Sea of Cortez". So I said yes, and we're heading south this winter on Passage Weaver. Pretty smart, eh?

Yes Kathy - we need a burgee. We first need to select the font - otherwise we've have ordered it by now. We haven't finalized boat color yet either - that's planned for this Thursday when we go to see one similar to our current thinking.

Another trip to Alaska is definately in the plan - but we don't know when. I want to go this summer (2013), but I suspect other activities & commitments will prevent it. It sure is tough to be retired. So maybe 2014? I must admit, I can't wait to round Cape Caution and cross Dixon Entrance at 15 knots if needed...!

Maybe now I'll finally get to drive a R 27!

Question: When selling/trading can a boat's registered name be transferred to another boat ?

If you are referring to the Coast Guard documented name, yes you can transfer that to the new boat. Just file the proper paperwork.

Humm...Island Weaver might have been a good choice too - but we've picked Passage Weaver.

The only formal name registration is with the USCG. For documented vessels, you register a name and hailing port which must be unique. You can have the same name as someone else as long as the hailing port is different. Here's a link to check of the name is already in use:

I did not register Island Ranger but I could have. You can see Rich's Island Ranger 29 on the list. You can also see some big 64 ft tug boat named Island Ranger out of Seattle. Actually, one Marina welcomed us back ( a place we'd never been) thinking we were the "real" Island Ranger. Glad I didn't have to pay his mooring fee..

The new owners of Island Ranger are welcome to maintain her existing name - they'll even get a burgee free if they do....

Thanks for the info on transferring a boat name. My current R-25 is documented and Jeff mentioned there was no issue in transferring it. 😀

My talk with Jeff went very well... now off to do the arithmetic etc.

I've talked with my local Edmonds marina (Paul) about applying bottom paint to a brand new boat delivered directly to him at the marina yard before it ever gets into the water. He said applying bottom paint to a brand new boat is more involved that applying bottom paint to a boat that had already been painted... something about having to remove the wax and scuffing/sanding/scraping the pristine looking hull to provide a better anchor/surface for the bottom paint to cling to. He also suggested two coats of paint. This would jump the per foot cost from $10 for an already painted boat to $25. Depending on cost of the paint brand/quality this would give a grand total of around $1300 to apply two coats of paint to a brand new hull. He also mentioned if I wanted to pay $400/gallon the bottom paint would last me for a good 5 years... :lol:

Mac, you mentioned that bottom paint would produce more drag and lower the overall speed the boat could otherwise attain. Where can I go to research this better to understand the bottom paint drag affect on a boat's speed ?

BTW... the 2013 R-27 specs that Jeff described to me today are awesome so now the fun begins as I contemplate my next move. 😉

Good luck with your calculations. I'm sure Jeff will find a production slot for you....

I don't have any quantitative data to calculate the impact on speed/efficiency with bottom paint. Lots depends on the bottom paint itself. I think it also has more of an impact (%) at slow speeds (like sailboats) as compared to faster boats. Some people have reported a 10% loss in top end speed on power boats with bottom paint - but I think there are way too many variables to apply that to us.

And yep - the first application is more costly due to the prep required. I haven't heard of bottom paint lasting 5 years here...wonder what brand? It still will need periodic cleaning - can you still have that done while in the Edmonds Marina?

If I could get away without bottom paint - I would. But that's not an option for the way we use our boat.

Great news about your new boat and trip to the Sea of Cortez! I am delighted for you both 😀

Cascadia arrived in San Diego yesterday and will be living at Kona Kai Marina this winter. Gus and I will be driving down beginning October 19th, the day our soon-to-be-former home closes. If you want to give Passage Weaver a break from the long drive south, come by and drop her in for a bit of relaxation for you all. Or just drop by, it is a dog-friendly marina 😀

Congratulations to you on your new Tug. Robyn and I expect to complete our purchase of the Christina Bee from Steve and Tina Memorial Day weekend. Perhaps if you are up to leading an Alaska cruise in 2014 we will be prepared to tag along. In the mean time, we look forward to crossing wakes with you from time to time.
