Penrose state park advice sought

Anybody got any insights on penrose state park in the south sound?

I am heading down there for a few days at the end of May and trying to gauge how hard it will be to get on a mooring ball on a Friday. Do i have to get there in the mooring and wait for someone to leave around lunch time?

Anybody got some experience of arrival times and how busy in late May early June?

I’ve had an easy time getting on the dock even this time of year. Watch the tides and depth closely as you approach the dock. I think it’s doable even at very low tide , but the water is definitely skinny there.

Agree with Ernie.

In late May 2009, I took the Red Ranger, my brand new R-21-EC, there on a Friday afternoon. It was approaching low tide, and I probably should have waited for a rising tide.

But, using my eyesight and the chartplotter, I crept along the channel until I could safely tie up at the dock. Only one other boat used the dock that weekend, though there was a larger boat tied up at the head of the channel.

I sometimes think those South Sound parks don't get near the use they should.

Is the dock ok? I thought it would dry out at low tide? and is not known to be in great condition?

I was thinking of trying to get a mooring ball on the west side of the headland and dinghy into the dock.

looks like I will have a minus tide one of the nights hence the dock question.

On our one trip to Penrose Park we anchored out by the beach as well as tied up at the dock. We found the dock to be in good shape and had plenty of room but as mentioned you need to be careful coming into the dock as there are shallow spots. It’s a wonderful park for hiking.
