We have some sad news to share with you. I called this afternoon to talk to Pete about a get together we were planning to have this coming week and the call was answered by his brother. He told me that Pete was found on the dock by his boat this morning and had passed away. Sporty was waiting patiently on the boat for permission to leave. Please say a prayer for one of the greatest characters I have ever met in my life, he was a special friend. Once we know more we will post it.

Bob and Nita,

Our hearts are saddened by this news about Pete. We've spent a lot of time with him as our tugs are moored in the same marina. Joe and I were going to go over to see him today but got involved in a project and didn't get around to it. Thank you for posting.

Sincerely,
Ruth and Joe

RIP Pete. I'm happy we had the opportunity to meet you, on the water. Loved those smoked oysters.

Bridget and I are very sad to here the news about Pete. We met Pete last March when we took delivery of our boat. Pete was kind enough to meet us up in the San Juans with his boat and his dog sporty. He took the time to show us around to many cool places. Pete had a very kind nature and we are grateful for the time we got to spend with him getting to know him and sporty.
It truly breaks our hearts to learn about his passing.
Pete we will miss you and will forever hold fond memories of the time we spend together.
May you rest in peace my brother and know that we love you. Many blessings as you journey on to the other side.

This morning I awoke early with a plan to add yesterday’s leg "Southern Gulf Island Cruise" update of our journey to Tugnuts. However upon opening the web page, I read that Pete Cleland has cast his lines from this dock and moved onto the next.

I am a firm believer in the fact that when life ends here on this earth, you simply move onto another. While we are saddened by hearing of Pete’s passing, remember at the moment he departed, somewhere on this great planet of ours, a new life was born. This new life will bring happiness and join to many people and continue the journey that Pete began. Pete has simply made room for this life.

While Pete was a true “character” he was one that you were amazed by when he spoke of all the things he had done in this life. I will always remember Pete for the “Oysters”…… for every time oysters are mentioned, we all think of Darrell and Bruce eating Pete’s 20 year old oysters!

For all of those that are left here on the dock, remember to live today as if it is your last, for it may be.

Sail on Pete Cleland, sail on…….

I did not know Pete but nonetheless -- Very sorry and sad to hear this news. Thank goodness he didn't fall into the water. Regards...

I had the pleasure of helping Pete experience a new adventure in his life. He loved his Ranger Tug and he loved his pal Sporty. A true character in every sense of the word. I have eaten his 20+ year old oysters (and prayed that his patended sealing system really worked) and had a beer with him on the back deck of his boat. Pete carried the Ranger Tug torch everywhere that he went telling stories of how he was Messmerized by Jeff. (I always got a kick out of that) Pete, I am happy to have had the chance to meet you. You will be missed.

From the entire crew at the Ranger Tug - Monroe manufacturing plant we will really miss Pete. Bob, Nita, and Pete were planning another "Thankyou" BBQ for us here at the plant. We'll still have it, only we'll be thanking Pete. He was always willing to let us know how we should have done it. And with Pete it was always presented in such a way that we wanted to do it his way. Our thanks to Pete for what he gave us in the short time we knew him.

What terrible news. Dee and I thought he was a great guy. We were looking forward to seeing him at the next rendezvous. He will be missed. May he rest in peace.

As a working doc who had to sit and hold a hand at the ICU this morning because there is nothing we can do, let me assure you that there are worse ways to leave this world than to be shuffling down the dock, admiring your tug, and then have the lights go out as though you were pole axed from behind - many worse ways... And I agree with the comment to live your life as though today is the last - I have not done that and I am striving to change...

Lyman, the boys and I were sorry to hear of Pete's passing. He was a great guy who always had a story to tell and was eager to hear of adventures others have had. We will think of you Pete when we drop anchor at Sucia Island...

Here is a shot of Pete on our trip to Stuart island.

REST IN PEACE BROTHER!

I was the most fortunate guy to be able to deliver Pete his new Ranger R29. I remember heading down to Bellingham with Pete calling me every 30 minutes of the way. This just happened to be the delivery that "I" did not take the time to put oversized load signs on the truck while hauling it over for the 3 hour trip. Well while Pete was so anxious to get his boat, I was pulled over on the side of the road with State Patrol waiting for almost four hours to have our other truck driver haul the boat up to Bellingham with the right equipment  . With that all said, Pete was the most understanding and giving guy. I also own an unopened box of salmon from the year I was born that was given to me from Pete. It has a letter on it from Pete and will always remain with me to remind me of him. You will be missed Pete.

Just a final thought about Pete Cleland. Jeff Messmer, Joe and Ruth (R-Matey) and Nita and I were there this afternoon for Pete's memorial in Anacortes. Family and friends shared many stories about who he was, a very gentle, caring and loving person who lived a very adventurious life of flying, camping, hiking, hang gliding and of course boating plus whatever caught his fancy. Pete will be missed by many, God bless him. Once I got to know him I realized what a great man he was.

If anyone would like to send a message to Pete"s family, they have access to the messages.

Hi All,
Pete had a luncheon for the staff at Monroe who built his R-29 when he took delivery. He called me and asked me if I would help him put on a BBQ for the staff there this summer, I told him we would split it. Since he has passed I decided to go ahead and do the luncheon in his memory. If anyone is interested they could set up a similiar luncheon in Kent for the folks there in memory of Pete. Any help would be appreciated and perhaps this could become an annual event.
