We are planning to boat from Edmonds to Anacortes on 5/31 in order to join the flotilla leaving on 6/1. Are there others who are heading to Anacortes on 5/31? We would love to head up there with you. Reply to Cynthia and Bob

Hi BobnDoc! We'll be heading up on the 31st as well from Kingston. We'd love extra company too - however we might be a little slow for your taste in our R25! Feel free to send a PM - Your neighbors across the water, Brian and Nicole Brown

We are planning on leaving on the 1st from Anacortes. Might we join with you. With the R21, we will be looking for smooth water and slower speed. If it can work out, please let me know best time to join up.

We'll be wandering up to Poet's Cove after the Edmonds Yacht Club gathering at LaConner over the Memorial Day weekend.
May stop off for a night at Fish Bay and then on to Bedwell Harbor. Look forward to meeting Luna Blue and others.

Howdy! Sounds like a plan to me, we will probably head to Anacortes on the 31st as well.

I'll be heading to Anacortes from Everett on the 31st as well. I'm guessing you are looking to take the outside passage west of Whidbey? Right now I'm thinking I'll stick with the inside passage and deal with Deception Pass. If I change my mind, I may try the Swinomish Channel.

But maybe I'll throw this out there for feedback from others who have taken both routes - would it be worth it coming out of Everett to take the outer passage instead of staying inside?

Why wouldn't you take swinomish channel?

No weather. Pretty, Direct

I've used the Swinomish Channel many times. It's slow going at 4 Kts (no wake speed) so adds to one's travel time.

I always try and get into the channel at or close to high tide as the southern entrance is quite shallow after not being dredge for a few years. Just stay inline with the marker on Whitbey and the marker located before the channel takes a sharp turn to port entering La Conner.

I like to stay overnight in La Conner to break the journey up and allow for lower cruise speed when wanting to cruise up to the San Juan's and beyond.

The current can run at several kts in the channel so timing is important and making it there during slack period is beneficial.

The Swinomish Channel is a safer bet with variable and unknown weather considerations.

Not entirely against taking the Swinomish, it's all a matter of timing, weather, etc. The simpler, more direct route would be Deception Pass - 12 knots versus 4 knots (even though some boaters may go faster) - and leaving Everett at the right time to get there by 2:30 pm on the 31st shouldn't be an issue.

But if things don't always go as planned, then it's good to have an alternate.

Given the choice, I will almost always stay on the east side of Whidbey. On the west side, the area between Port Townsend and Fort Casey can get very rough, and once you've gone that far there's no short cut to get back to the east side.
As for Deception Pass vs Swinomish Channel, we usually use Swinomish, but that's because we like LaConner for lunch or dinner.

The shallow point near the island at the south entrance is still around 9ft near low water. Once you are past la Conner itself all the crabbing and fishing boats open up to higher speeds. The tug generally makes a bigger wake than these outdrive boats though. I generally travel around 7 knots so it's quite a quick journey and then once past the north entrance you can open up.

All options are possible but you avoid the weather and swell on the west side and not having to worry about current tide timing for deception pass. Went through there at 7 knots against last time. My grip on the wheel was a little tighter than normal.

Cutwater28GG: I've been called out on the radio about my speed passing through/past LaConner and was asked to slow down. Since then I keep my speed at 4kts or below from the south entrance at Goat Island all the way to the old rusty bridge at the north end.

You're right about the wake size the RT's can create.

Totally agree on the speed through town. Once you get out and further north I see everybody speed up though.

Given advantageous tides and suitable seas, our first choice is to go west of Whidbey and up and over Fidalgo to Cap Sante. Best case is to ride the ebb up to Partidge Point and catch the flood up Anacortes. Or, continue north into the San Juans. Watch the wind and tide, and if the east end of Juan de Fuca looks good go outside.

Hi, Steve and Denise

Cynthia and I recently took delivery of a new Cutwater 28. We live in Edmonds and our boat is berthed at the marina (D-53).

We are interested in exploring membership at the Edmonds Yacht Club. Not quite sure where to begin.

We are leaving from Edmonds on the 31st to rendezvous with the Ranger/Cutwater flotilla leaving for Poet's Cove from Anacortes on 6/1. We are looking forward to meeting you at Poet's Cove and to learning more about the Edmonds Yacht Club.

Bob Gold and Cynthia Holdren

We're thinking of heading up the Swinomish on Wednesday and will be heading out of Kingston around 8:30am. We haven't navigated this area of water yet, so anyone heading up that way we'd love to travel along.

Cutwater28GG: That's an excellent video and full of very useful info and advice. Thank you for posting that link. 🙂

One of the things I always pay attention to is to have in mind a port I can quickly goto in case weather turns bad or for some other emergency on board. For example, say you decide to go north from Admiralty Inlet to get to Lopez Sound and bad weather or worsening seas are encountered at around the mid point.... where to head for cover ? You could retreat and go through Deception Pass for calmer conditions in Skagit Bay and then head for Deception Pass Marina, La Conner or Oak Harbour to lay over.

When I plan a route I will look for mid points of a longish stretch of water and identify safe harbors that I can get to if the need arises.
