Points North Seminar March 15-16, 2014 Anacortes, WA

The 2014 Points North Seminar will be bigger and better than ever! The seminar will be held Saturday March 15th and Sunday March 16th, 2014 from 9:00 A.M- 4:00 P.M. in the Seafarers building in Anacortes, WA. Breakfast pastries, coffee and juice will be provided. There will be a one hour break for lunch. http://www.portofanacortes.com/communit ... k-building For those of you that are not familiar with the Seafarers building it is next to Cap Sante Marina in downtown Anacortes. Moorage will be available at Cap Sante Marina for those that would like to come by boat. For those coming by vehicle Lodging is available at the Swinomish Casino and Lodge http://www.swinomishcasinoandlodge.com/ We have secured a special rate of $109.00 ($107.00 AAA) if booked early. Captain Mac has lead the seminar for the past several years. This year the seminar will be lead by Patrick Beattie with input from Captain Mac. Patrick lives on Saltspring Island in the Canadian Gulf Islands and over the years has helped organize our annual rendezvous and Desolation Cruise. Patrick is a very seasoned captain that will cover many different topics including clearing customs, anchoring, tides, currents, outfitting, storage, stern tying, safety, Dodd Narrows and much more. This seminar is a pre-requisite for anyone joining us for the Desolation Sound Cruise. There is no charge for Ranger Tug and Cutwater owners. We will cover some of the same information however much of it will be new. We have a different presenter this year that will be give us a different perspective. I attend the seminar every year and I learn new things every year. It also helps me to start thinking about what I need to do to get myself and my boat ready for the season.

Terrific job at the seminar!

Really great guidance and isn't it funny how our to-do and to-buy lists never end. We really appreciate all you and Gayle did ... a big thanks to Sarah as cruise director; Andrew and Kenny thank you so much for taking time to troubleshoot an issue with Sweet Pea (in teaming rain); and to Mr. Messmerizer for bringing us closer to adding a checkmark to our bucket list.

Looking forward to Poet's Cove and Desolation.

And to seeing what payback Kenny is plotting 🙂

Great seminar by Patrick and team! Thanks to all of you for such an informative and practical introduction/review of how much fun it is to cruise and the many ways to be prepared and ready for a great boating season and lifestyle.

Afterwards I went to the Anacortes Library and checked out the newest edition of Chapman's Piloting and Seamanship to review some of the material presented.

Wow! I opened to the chapter on Marine Engines since I need to learn more and wanted some current information. On page 751 there is a half-page color photo of an R27 flying the Canadian flag! Many of us attending the workshop this weekend will be doing the same in just a few months, flying the courtesy flag while enjoying the beautiful waters of British Columbia!

Thank you all...Jeff, Andrew, Kenny, Sarah and Patrick and Gayle. This is a truly worthwhile event for anyone interested in cruising. As a USCG Auxiliarist, Boating Safely instructor, vessel examiner and Flotilla and Division staff officer I thought Patrick did an awesome job of preparing people for what can happen at sea. Our motto, Semper paratus, always ready.

Andrews and Kenny's Garmin presentation was really helpful.

Very professional job by all. Bravo Zulu.

Thank you all for an amazing weekend. Not only did Patrick do a fantastic job, it was nice to have the social breaks to ask situation specific questions i.e. how to cruise north with dogs. Molly and Buoy (our long-haired dachshunds) will begin dinghy training when our R-27, Buoy Navigator is delivered!

While attending the Points North Seminar, Patrick mentioned the "Anchor Thimble" my husband designed to be used to free up an anchor caught on the bottom. While there, someone asked me how it worked. Time was short and we couldn't demonstrate it, but you can see how it works in the album "Nellie Too". Just look for "Anchor Thimble" and see a demonstration.

This "Anchor Thimble" saved Cascadia when her anchor got caught in Squirrels Cove in Desolation Sound as well as our Rocna in another bay.
