In the market for a more reliable way to show how full the tank is -
Iive Been looking and talking to the Scad tank monitors and they do seem to be a good value

anybody installed a tank monitor?

We have a SCAD level monitor for our waste tank. We like it a lot. Has to be calibrated, then seems accurate. Much better than "the nose."

At Prevost Harbor on Stuart Island tonight. Calibrated our SCAD TM1 yesterday in Bellingham using a 5 gallon jug to fill the black water tank after first pumping it empty. Looking forward to using it!
For 6 seasons before that we just counted days between pumpouts. By measuring the pumpout volume we concluded that we put 2.5 gallons a day (2 people) into the black water tank. When in remote areas between pumpouts we try to be creative in keeping the liquid additions to the tank to a minimum. That worked for some long cruises in Canada where working pumpouts are few and far between.
The SCAD TM1 was a pretty easy install. Should have done it a couple of years ago.

PS: LOTS of previous threads on installing an inline charcoal filter on the black water tank vent. Eliminates ALL the vent odors.

Our tank monitor is unreliable, so we put a little counter in the head. Got one of those battery operated ones and stuck it to the wall with Velcro. Every flush is recorded. On our Tecma a full flush is about .6 gallons. Since we have a 40 gallon black water tank, we just round up to a gallon/flush to give us a margin of safety. It is a very convenient back up to the tank monitor and gives you an easy visual of when it is getting close to time to act. For us, when we get into the 30’s it is time to find a place to unload.

The problem is always guests and whether you stuck to the program (“honey? did you remember to hit the counter?”), but once you get into the habit, it works great. As noted in an early post we had a crappageddon or poopocalypse, for want of a better term, and switched to this method. Between the charcoal filter and the counter, all good. No drama. No smells.

Just noticed I got the amount of water wrong. It is even less than half a gallon each flush. So we have been operating with too great a margin of error.

Better to have pumped out too often than not often enough.

And we used the SCAD on our classic 27 and it worked fantastic. Highly recommended.

We just know when its time based on usage. When cruising we know to pump out when ever we fuel (about every 4 days). if we're cruising locally, we know that when the flushed start to smell, it's time to pump out.
