I have a 2013 R29. There had never been a distinct feel when shifting between
Neutral forward or reverse gear.
I believe this is usually called a “detent” or something like that in car gear shifts
Caused by a spring loaded ball engaging and disengaging in a slot in the shifter mechanism at the appropriate
Position.
Sometimes the pressure on the ball can be adjusted to give a more distinct feel between gears.
Because on my boat there is none I have to listen for the engine noise to change to know when it is
In or out of gear.
On more than one occasion when docking I have had an exciting moment having stepped out of the side door
On to the dock only to find that the boat is heading off on a trip of its own!
Good job the shifter is just inside the door and I’ve been able to tap it back to neutral!
Is there an adjustment somewhere in the shifter to give some” feel” to the shifts?

If you have the Yanmar there is an adjustment screw under the cover of the throttle to "stiffen" the throttle. I am not sure if this will give you the feel you are looking for. I would also check the connection on the cable to the transmission shift bracket.

As Knot Flying said, there is an adjustment screw under the cover. I also took some white tape cut into two triangles and placed one on the shift lever, and one one the base that when aligned shows you are in neutral.

Hello,

Like all have said above you can adjust the tension but I dont recall there being a adjust for the detent. The Volvo shifter has both, you may need to replace the shifter if the detent has worn out. Hope this helps.

Thanks,
