Was researching navigating in NY Harbor and came across this really cool video on boating safety in Port of NY.

Even if you're not going there, there's a lot of good takeaways on boating safely in general.

Ports of New York & New Jersey Boating Harbor Guide

That is a very informative video. In 2014 we did a trip through NY harbor and up the Hudson to Lake Champlain. Get from point A to point B as quickly as possible. The passenger water taxi's are going in all different directions, at high speed and do not alter course, stay out of their way and always be alert. (They were probably NY city taxi drivers before they got their marine Capt Licenses) The wakes created from all the traffic will make you feel like you are in a washing machine. Liberty Landing Marina in NJ across from Manhattan is a great marina, pricey though. You can then take a water taxi from the marina over to Manhattan and take in the city. If you need info on stops going up the Hudson let me know.

We went up the Hudson river past the George Washington bridge and ducked in the Harlem river. There is a low railroad bridge that I think is open unless a train is coming. Once on the Harlem river lots of big bridges a sunken marina and lots to look at as you pass Yankee stadium etc. You end up back on the East river and you can head south again and get back to the Statue Of Liberty area. Fun trip. Lots of crazy boat operators. That Liberty Landing marina gives you a spectacular views of NYC especially at night.

Navigated through NY Harbor many, many times. I'd say 60% of the time it can get pretty rough but then there are times when the water can be like glass, it's pretty amazing. The roughest area is usually where the Hudson comes into the Harbor. Traveling up the east river you should really time the tides and currents. You can get an additional 6 knots in some sections of the east river if you time it right. It's a lot of fun and Hell gate is pretty cool. Wind, current, and ferries are usually the reason it gets so rough but our R25 handles it no problem. Nighttime is even more beautiful with the lights of the city. There is a cool little anchorage behind the Statue of Liberty. There is a marked channel along the southern side that leads back to an anchorage. There is a ramp there and you can tie up for a bit and go to the diner across the street. The anchorage is really nice and holds well and the nighttime views are amazing.

Oh, and traveling under the Verrazano Bridge can also get a bit rough but once you cross over into the harbor it gets much calmer. Have see 3-4 feet at the bridge and 1-2 in the harbor before.
