The R29S comes with 8 beautiful round port windows. When at dock or rafted off with another vessel it would be nice to have the availability of cabin privacy when desired. What have others done to shield interior cabin visibility from the outside (at night, while sleeping or changing cloths), while still being attractive to the eye from the inside?

After cutting the memory foam topper for the master berth we took some of the left over foam and cut circles the size of the portholes then covered them with nautical themed fabric. They are easy to insert and remove and look great.

Jim, we put our ballcaps on them.. Go get 8 Ranger tugs caps! Ha ha! Have you thought about inserting a cut circle between the screen and the glass? This is what I am thinking about for mines. I will use some sunbrella, so that if it rain, it will not damage the fabric.

Our R23 only has a couple, but for the benefit of privacy, visually attractive and heat/light control we made custom shaped sandwiches of sunbrella fabric and windscreen shade material. Local canvas shop can sew a border. Easy in or out, looks OEM and substantially reduces light for sleeping and heat so the AC runs less frequently. Same setup for the skylights. We put them between the screen and glass hatch covers. The porthole covers just push in. The border ads some rigidity. They stay in place even when bouncy across the big lake. Store in a lidded tub under dinette seats with the cockpit screens when not in use. Or they stack like canvas drink coasters on a shelf in the cave. Lying next to them now, and more red filtered light comes thru our claret red hull than the skylights and portholes.

Does anyone know the diameter of these portholes? The one thing I didn't measure this weekend...
Thanks,

If you have a Christmas Tree Shop in your area, you can buy a bunch of shower caps for very little. They are opaque (?) easy to apply and take off and store easily.

Thanks,

On my R-27/OB model (has 3 round port holes) the port hole brass ring's inside diameter measures 5.75". Note that the port hole tapers after maybe 1" a bit toward the outside.

My first mate cut discs out of the thin foam that you buy for non-slip shelf "paper" on boats. They just pop into the portholes and are easily removed and stored.
