I'm looking to purchase a portable air conditioner on my 27 Tug that "mounts" over a roof hatch. Has anyone had any experience with any of these? I have a Honda 2000 generator that I will use to run the air conditioner when not on shore power.
thanks in advance,
Carl

I had one before on another boat and it worked great... called a carry-on Would work of my 1700 watt inverter as well as as a 1700 watt Generator I had from Costco. A great solution

This year when we traveled cross country I bought a 5,000 BTU window unit. When at campgrounds I would set it in the bottom of the cabin entry door with the edges of the door lined with cut swimming noodles and a 2X4 on edge in the cockpit to support the back. I then applied the sunbrella privacy screen down to the top of the A/C. I plugged it into the outlet in the cave. For sleeping at night with temperatures well above 80 degrees it worked like a champ. It wasn't necessary during the day since we were either on the road or out sightseeing. I am not sure if I would want to use this setup while cruising, but after a few hot sleepless nights it may be something I would consider. For the cost of $150.00 for the A/C at Home Depot it was a great solution for us while traveling and not being able to use the marine A/C while not on the water.

I found it useful to keep the Windows covered to prevent the cabin to heat up. And personally I like it hot and muggy. A bit of cross ventilation can do wonders or even a swamp cooler.

I keep a large stretch cloth on my boat as found in stretchscreens.com to provide cover. It is so light and folds away into a very small space. Quickly deployed or tucked away the white fabric gives light but keeps the heat out.

Using a household ac on a boat reminds of the movie with Larry the cable guy where he had one in the rear window of his pickup truck playing a health inspector

Ditto on Mike's land travel solution with a window air conditioner. After driving 400 miles or more a nice fitful sleep in a RV park with a cooler climate because of an air conditioner is just what the doctor ordered. I don't sleep well sweating. Say what you will but we were glad to have it. Once we are done with land travel out of the cave it comes and into the truck it goes. No modifications required. Git r Done. Why are redneck murders so hard to solve? All the DNA is the same and there are no dental records.
