Jan. 25, 2015: Portland area: Columbia River mile 114.6; "Sandy Beach" public dock on Government Island (West dock); The head dock is breaking apart between the inner finger and the outer finger, probably due to debris flow or high water. There are currently two large sections of open flowing water and the dock continues to grind away at itself. It probably will not be long before another large section of concrete dock comes barreling downstream. We recommend caution in this area and use only the inside of the inner finger to avoid debris. The outer finger no longer has shore access. This is an otherwise nice dock area with restrooms on shore.

I will report this to the Marine Patrol in the morning.

Thanks Mike. We noticed this after the big wind storm that we had last Fall. I hope that the State will repair the dock. They are some of the nicest in Oregon. We don't seem to see the same type of investment in this infrastructure as other states.

We got the word through contacts at RCYC that state parks does plan to repair the damage and is already getting estimates. Looks like it may cost upwards of $100,000 for that repair. That is a regular destination for us from our Columbia River moorage. As others undoubtedly are, we are glad that the parks folks are on it already and appear to have the budget to get it fixed.

Thanks! I am glad to hear they are working on a repair. I would sure hate to have a close encounter with a runaway piece of concrete dock. I think the fiberglass would lose that one. I agree it is a nice facility and was happy to see they keep the restrooms available even in January. It was a beautiful day to be out Saturday, little traffic and nice views of Mt. Hood.
