POT PULLER POWER

I am putting a pot puller on the R25SC on the aft starboard side (so I have plenty of room to run wire to battery compartment) .... any recommendations on which battery I should tap into? Was thinking hotel loads but most of you have more experience than I do in this .... thoughts? I can put a breaker or fuse close to the pot so that is not an issue.

The easiest and best solution would be to just plug into your downrigger plug if you have the downrigger pads and plugs that the factory installed, if not - from your house battery bank to a isolation switch (Pergo switch) to fuse then to your pot puller. The size fuse and Gage wire to use should be listed in the installation instructions for your particular puller. Best of luck. Bob
Just a question as to why you decided on the starboard side of your boat? I would think the port side would have better visibility due to the location of the head on the R-25.

Bob - Found Scotty power plug right next to where I mounted the pot puller - thanks - tested perfect.
Why on Stb side ... mine is a R25SC so at least I have pot puller on same side as the helm .... not sure what the head has to do with anything ... Any cabin with forward helm is not going to be optimum .... SeaSport has a good idea with a second helm on the after deck ... but "this ain't a SeaSport" .... so Viv will drive/I will pull pots and we will stop over a pot. I have been with guys who snatch the buoy on the run and crank in while moving ... ok if you have enough hands but in our case, we are going to have to slow down and ... well ... now I understand: Life and work makes you tired, so you quit work to do what you want to do and get REtired! Thanks for mentioning the downrigger power ... saved me a lot of hassles.

Doug, The reason I asked the question and mentioned the head is it was my understanding that the head located in the aft starboard side of the cabin caused a blind spot on the starboard cockpit area.
This would cause the Helsman and the Crew in the cockpit to be working blind of each other, this can be overcomed with practice, most boats will stay under power until the crab bouy/line is grabed so the boat still has steerage then cut power. If grabbing the line with boat dread in the water it is best to place boat up wind/current and let mother-nature assist you, however this will place the crab pot line under the boat on the other side, not a problem once the pot leaves the bottom.
I would recommend a few practice runs with just a buoy rope and weight to get a smoth system that works for you and your crew prior to setting your crab pots.
Be sure to weight your pots (I use 10lb barbell weights) so they will be where you dropped them, and Mark on your GPS so the Helsman can go right to them.
I envy you as you live in some of the best crabbing waters in the PNW BOB

Bob - thanks for the comments. I have not been crabbing but I have been shrimping many times. My old boat, Campion Wheelhouse 210, was set up for it perfectly ... there was no cabin behind the helm so I just left the door open and access was great ... that was then; this is now. I am sure Viv and I will figger it out ... we really enjoy doing this together, and we are not the zealots who put max pots in and run at max speed and all of that ... we plod. Since there is just the 2 of us, we are not going to go off in a rush and try to solve global warming. Suspect she will wind up at the helm and I will be in the labor department, and I now have the right puller with the tensioner on it, and we may only throw one pot at a time this year as it is our first year on the RT .... that is the big plus of being retired :lol: Again, thank you for your insights ... if we were really serious about it, we would have gotten the SeaSport, but once she spotted the RT, I did not have a chance :lol: :lol: :lol:

:lol: Already put one on both port and starboard and have a rear facing camera and monitor on the helm ... Not as good as eyeballs, but we just gotta remember to not hurry either .... nice thing about being retired .... but thanks!
