Hello,

A newbie to the site and Tugs. I would appreciate feedback. I am considering purchasing a 2011 Ranger 21EC Tug. It has approximately 300 hours on it, and appears to be in excellent physical condition. It is in a slip in San Diego and purchase does not include a trailer.

Does anyone have any feedback on this year/model? The good, bad, ugly. Any issues with the Yanmar diesel, or other components? Will it be difficult to find/purchase replacement parts or accessories? Especially since model 21EC has been discontinued.

I am considering purchasing a trailer. is there any special considerations (I.e. hull shape, drive, etc.) when considering what trailer I buy? I have found several general boat trailers locally for sale on Craigslist.

I appreciate any advise or feedback. Just want to make sure I am not making a poor choice purchasing this year/model boat.

Thank you!

The yanmar 30 HP is a great little motor, most parts you can get from your local auto parts store, on-line (Amazon), or various marine supply outlets. The boat and motor are easy to work on, and modify to your special usage. The trailer that came with my boat, and the one that I've seen on most R-21's in the PNW is the E-Z loader, model EZB. 19-22/24 3700. This trailer does have a drop down for the skeg fwd of the prop.
Good: is a fun boat to drive, looks cute and handles great!
Bad: is small, slow and your limited to the number of crew on board!
Ugly : is hard to get away with doing anything border line illegal or stupid as the boat sticks out like a sore thumb, but then all ranger tugs do!
Hope you enjoy your new boat as much as I have enjoyed mine.

I have a 2009 R-25 for sale with less than 400 hours on a 150 hp cummins with 2 axle trailer. If you have any interest let me know. jeffimac@yahoo.com

Thanks for the information Bob. We intend to cruise the bay, with the occasional trip around Point Loma. Not expecting a rocket ship, but hopefully something that can get us in ahead of occasional unexpected swells.

Good to know that I can't use the typical boat trailer due to skeg. All my previous boats were outboard/outdrive.

Thanks again!!
