I am replacing my water pump on a R23 with a new a johnson variable speed pump. I will be installing a small accumulator at the same time. With a standard pump I know you set the accumulator pressure to about 3 psi below the pump cut in pressure. The variable speed pump doesn't have a "cut in " pressure as it always tries to maintain 60 psi. With that in mind, what do I sent the accumulator pressure to? If its less than 60 psi then it doesnt seem like the accumulator would provide any value. Do I set it at 60 or even a few pounds higher?

What have other folks done that run a variable speed water pump with an accumulator?

I am no expert….but on my last boat I went thru 2 variable speed pumps before I read that they should not have a accumulation tank. Just my experience… please check

I believe it depends on the brand of pump. This quote is from the Johnson (SPX) website:

"For minimizing the number of starts and stops - and thereby reducing wear and tear on the pump when only small amounts of water are drawn off - it is recommended to install the WPS pumps together with and accumulator tank."

I'm looking at adding a tank as well and have the Johnson Variable. Which tank are you looking at?

I installed the new variable speed pump today. I ran it without the accumulator to see how it worked. Definitely better than the original. I then added the accumulator. I think it's the smallest they make. About .5 literally. Since the pump cuts out at 60 pis I set it to 55 psi. Another huge improvement. I need to try a lower pressure to see if it works better or worse.

I would definitely recommend the Johnson 5 gpm variable speed but with a small accumulator

I used the Jabsco .65 Liter accumulator
