I have an R 25 that's 2 years old with a volvo d3 . My boat lives in mid coast Maine and I seriously need a line cutter . Has anyone installed one with minimum modification to the shaft or prop ? It seems there are clearance concerns . Does Ranger Tugs have a preference or recommendation ? Andrew ? I have done a discussion search but can't find anyone who has actually figured out what fits and works well .
Thanks , Richard

Hello Richard,

On my 21EC, I have a product called a Shaft Razor. It looks like this

There are several iterations of line cutters positioned forward of the propeller; I chose this as it is fairly narrow (which addresses the space limitations) at just under 3/4" thick and has TWO rows of cutting blades.

Good luck,

dave

Hi Richard,

Defender (www.defender.com) has something called Shaft Shark that is a "split-hub" version that does not require removal of the shaft. Comes in several sizes.

I am considering one for my C-28 but need to measure clearances.

Thanks guys ! There is nothing like direct experience from which to draw ! If the split one is no thicker than the solid unit one , I will get that . Time to go shopping......

While on the topic of prop safety issues, there is this NEAT HOOK Knife

which can be fitted with handles of various length to suit your boat's needs. It is sold at Sailor Solutions here (http://shop.sailnet.com/sailor-solution ... 70197.html). This could be espeically handy for those who boat is waters too cold/hostile to dive to deal with a fouled prop.

Fair winds and clear props,

dave

Thanks Dave... Just ordered a Hook Knife. Lots of crab pots around Puget Sound. 🙂

I put a Razor shaft cutter. Looks great, but then it took up all the space behind the prop......the exact place where I prop puller was used to pull the prop 😳 Now I am trying to figure out how to pull the prop. Already broke one proper puller. Suggestions. I only have about a 1/4 inch space between the prop and the shaft razor. It's not the split kind, but solid. Thinking about pulling the shaft, but that appears to be complicated.

Try a 'harmonic' prop removal tool. It's worked before on my 21EC.

This one is made by ACME who makes our Ranger Tug propeller...available from MANY retailers...here's one (http://www.wakemakers.com/oj-prop-knock ... uller.html).

Good luck,

david
