Classic 27, trying to remove bottles to repaint, nope - are they twist fit? Try to pull up and the plate in bottom of box wants to come off with them!

They should lift straight out. There is no twist hold in place for the tanks.

Well hell then….

They are stuck!!!

Finally got them out after pulling like hell!!

So now, do I replace with the same steel or go fiberglass, aluminum or stainless???

I’d go fiberglass if Trident (or some other mfg) made one small enough to fit in my propane locker. To my knowledge, none do.

My propane bottles have begun to show signs of rust, so I pulled them out this summer and coated one with spray-on Flex Seal. An experiment to possibly keep the rust at bay for awhile. The other remains at home (hooked up to an Ooni pizza oven — it’s handy for that!)

We don’t use our propane stove/oven heavily. For now, one tank is plenty. Plus we have an adapter that permits us to shift over to a small disposable propane bottle, the same kind that we use for our BBQ. We seem to be able to go a long time on just one of those bottles. If my propane tank rusts out too quickly, I may shift over to those entirely. That is, unless a fiberglass tank becomes an option — if that happens, I will upgrade to one of those.

I placed two of those rubber bathroom flooring tiles (easy draining type) under the tanks. They still rust a bit but much less. I also have scoured their bases and repainted them.

Just realized from the early conversation that these tanks are smaller? Great, it’s always something

Be careful about replacing these with fiberglass tanks as there are some major size propane refilling companies that won't refill fiberglass tanks. It has to do with questions regarding certification and the life of the tank dates and some of the companies that manufactured the tanks going out of business. Trawler Forum has a number of threads on this subject matter.
