We are looking for suggestions on what type of propane burner to use outside of the galley, that is safe to use on board. We want something that can hold a large pot big enough to cook several crabs at once. we dont want to use the galley as we would prefer not to have the odor associated with the cooking inside.

Anything that can boil a big pot of water 🙂

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance,

Dave and Lea

We use a portable induction burner plugged in at the barbecue outlet. Works well for medium(?) size pots, never tried anything jumbo sized.

Mr. Dave, instead of trying to bring a large pot of water to a boil, try steaming your crabs, same cooking time. Uses less gas and less time waiting for supper! I cook (steam) the crabs whole if processing for storage then place in 1-gal bags for freezing. If eating right away I'll clean them first, my I recommend a Cracken Crab Cleaner by Teal Crab co. By cleaning the crabs first you will not need as big of a pot. As far as type of cooker, any propane cooker/Turkey fryer will work, just be extra safe using onboard the boat! Good luck. Bob

Clean your crabs first by cutting them in half with a cleaver. Smaller pot, less cooking time

Ditto for induction. Works well for steaming clams and crabs. It can run off the inverter too. I have the Magma cookset and steamer.

thank you all
Really appreciate the feedback

We clean our crab then steam it on the boat. Quickest and least expensive way to cook crab. We can easily process 30+ a day onboard with a team of 3 people and some good music playing.

The law requires that crab be thoroughly cooked or thoroughly frozen for your daily limit. So every day we steam our catch. Picking the crab takes a lot longer and sometimes we run out of time to pick it. As long as the crab is steamed, it's thoroughly cooked, thus we're legal to crab the next day. We put the steamed crab in the refrigerator and pick it the next day.

We generally will steam about 80 crab over 4 days and not even go through a single 1.25 gallon tank of propane on our boat.
