Anybody have the approximate dimensions of the R-21EC cockpit? And maybe to compare, the dimensions of the R-25SC.

Hello Jake,

I'm working this weekend, but next chance I get I will measure the cockpit for you and post here.

The inside measurements of the R21-EC are 69"W x 109"L. The length includes the 19" bench seat. Someone else will have to provide the measurements of the R25-SC

Thanks Rick, that cockpit really is as big as it looks in the pictures. 🙂

Jake, The cockpit is big but the engine cover takes up a lot of the space. It has not been a problem for us though. We often have 5 or 6 of our grand kids on-board and we seem to manage well. I leave the cushion off the engine cover. We put the tackle box, bait, and what ever on the engine cover. Afterwards, the cover is easy to wash with sea water and sit on it.

I have a table I mounted on the aft bench step. With the table fore and aft it works like a side table for snacks, drinks, etc when sitting on the bench. With the table side-to-side we can sit on the bench and engine cover and have a face-to-face meal.

We enjoy our boat.

Thanks, also, forgot to ask, how deep is the cockpit? With and without the railings? I assume the railings are not (easily) removable.

23" to the top of the gunnel and almost 33" to the top of the railing. Not all cockpit railing is removable. The forward rails and the corner rails are fixed. The other rail will wiggle out easy enough.

Hi everyone ., My name is John and work for Pocket Yachts in Maryland ,we are a dealer for Ranger Tugs and Cutwater boats. I would be happy to get the measurements for you . Just e-mail me john@pocket-yachts.com. I have a 25 here in the show room as well as a 21 . let me know Thanks John

I looked at the 21 that was at the Seattle boat show and I think there has been a change in the rails. I believe that they were now all fixed. I could be wrong. No more need to carry a rubber mallet to remove the rails.

As far as volume, the cockpit on a 21 holds about 35 buckets of snow when it is about 8" deep. If you leave the cushion on the storage area in the back it is just the right height to push the snow off it and overboard. The cushion also stops the snow from going down the holes in the starboard that is used as the storage are cover.

I have it from a good source that the SURREY top is no longer available. This means that the new boats have FIXED side rails with no little gaps/pinch points in between rail sections. A dealer could chime in to clarify that the surrey is no longer an option. IF SO, the factory will need to update their advertising materials which show the 21EC with a surrey.

But my point is that David is correct, the side rails have been changed to be permanently mounted (that is, without removable sections).

What about the aft rail? Is it still removable? We take it down to access the swim platform better. Too bad about the side rails. We remove the side rails at times for fishing, and at some marinas those rails need to be removed to access the dock better.

Hello Rick,

Here is a pic of a 2014 R21-EC. Note the new cockpit rail. The Aft section does NOT appear removable. Sad...

Here's a clearer pic of the situation. This one is also listed as a 2014 model.

We have a 2010 R21-EC and three sections of the railing are removable - port, starboard, and aft. I guess Ranger decided to save a few bucks and make the railing one piece. For some people it would not make a difference. Personally, I am glad I have the removable sections on our boat.

David & Rick-

Something tells me that that there is a cost savings in the new rail for Ranger. They have to keep that entry level boat affordable. Once you have a 21 it's all about being like the Jeffersons...movin on up...

This also just makes our older Boats more valuable! We also have the mast further back. I think it looks silly so far forward. Then there's all that shiny bronze. Mine has patina! You just can't get that in a new boat!! (without chemicals)

Rick,
Regarding your 21EC, a year ago you wrote: "I have a table I mounted on the aft bench step. With the table fore and aft it works like a side table for snacks, drinks, etc when sitting on the bench. Do you have any photos of the table or can you please share additional info re your source of the table. Sound like a good modification of the 21EC .... mine is a 2006.

Hello Murdock,

As you wait for a reply from Rick, there is another example of a cockpit table in a 21EC. On the homepage of Tugnuts.com, along the right side of the page, there are a box of "Links" - on of them is titled "Voyages of the Port Nut." Click that link. At the top of his page there is another link titled "Upgrades/Repairs". About the 3rd item down that page is his version of a cockpit table.

Here is the link to the page: http://portnut.weebly.com/upgradesrepairs.html

Fair winds,

Dave,
Thanks very much. Very interesting link ... the table project looks doable.

Regards.

Yes. I bought the hardware and mounted the base but haven't yet built the table.

It's on my to do list.
