Hello All,

I am contemplating purchasing an R-21EC and have a question. On the Ranger Tugs website, the options seem a bit pricey to have installed at the factory.

So my question is does it make more sense to forgo most of the options and just add things over time yourself (different brands, cheaper, etc.)? Would you save a lot of money? Are their some items that are easy enough to do yourself and save?

Just curious what factory options make sense to have done while the boat is being built and which ones can be done after the fact either by oneself of at a yard at a cheaper price.

Thank you,

I would think that everything that has wiring involved, would be much more easier to get done by the factory staff, because they have the boat opened up to pass all the wiring easily so that it is out of sight thru the deckhead, bulkhead, bildge...). An example is the handrail pole in the cabin, this post is filled with wiring, this does a real clean job to hide the wiring. Then again, it can be done by the owner afterward but it would be much more work I guess.

Perhaps you could ask the factory to pre-wire the things that you may want to add later on by yourself...

Thank you very much for the reply.

Makes sense to ask for prewiring if you want to do things later with different equipment and/or by yourself.

Any other experiences or opinions are appreciated.

Thank you,

Even the hardware options may be best and cheaper from the factory. I am thinking of the swim rails. I know that the company that made my cockpit frame would cost out at about the same to make it from scratch. It is appreciated every time we get out of the water from the ladder. Essential to have in my mind. Also put the BBQ on the port side of the rail.

The one thing I would think hard on is the marine head.

There is a lot of storage lost with the holding tank etc. The worst thing is where it is located which is both good and bad. The bad is if it must be used while people are sleeping is almost always involves waking up both people. With a porta potty it could be left out at night, even in the cockpit , if one is anchored out. I the porta potty fits where the head for daytime use.

Food for thought.

Thank you. That is a good point. I was mostly thinking my wife would like a marine head rather than a porta-potty....... come to think of it, most of what I do is related her wishes

I kept the porta-pottie from my previous boat and also have the built in head. We can use either as needed for the reasons stated. Extends the time at anchor until a pumpouts is needed.

HI- Drago 72,
For us, (we are upgrading to an R31 from an R27), the factory install was important because I can then talk to people who have exactly the same set up and it makes trouble-shooting much easier. Being able to reach out to the factory/tugnuts and get solutions is a very nice thing. It helped us on our previous boat and will help with the one that is on the way!
