What's your opinions on the r-23 open water capabilities?

My opinion is that it depends on what is meant by open water.
Generally though, if feel like it is a dangerous notion to think of the the R23 as a blue water cruiser. It seems like setting yourself up for an eventual showdown with water that’s bigger than the boat.
I cruise PNW and with careful planning the R23 is up to any adventure within the Salish Sea, and even beyond toward AK with very fine attention to weather and route planning coupled with a large measure of patience

We live in florida, and would like to be able to run to the keys and then thru the islands.... florida to thr islands approximately 55 miles coast to coast!

Florida cruising along the coast and to the keys will be fine. As always winds and weather make the difference. When you say the islands are you talking Bahamas? On a perfect day yes, light winds nothing with a northerly component. However, I would want to be with a buddy boat and go fast before possibility of wind changes. Also, if weather changes you will be sorry. After May will give you better windows of opportunity with longer stretches of light winds. Most insurance companies have a size limit on insurance coverage in open waters for a reason.
