For anyone who went with the factory installed generator on your R-23. How loud is it? Where is it located? Thanks.

I can't say exactly for the R-23. However, I was at the Kent factory where the 2018 R-27/OB is being built and saw a Genset in the center cockpit locker. It was big and took up at least 1/3 of the locker's space. Have no idea about its noise level. Maybe go to the Genset manufacture's web site and look up the specs.

To be honest, when I first saw the Genset I thought it was an inboard engine as it was so massive. It's also an expensive item at around $15K, right ?

You could call Andrew Custis and ask him about noise level info, or post in "Ask the Ranger Factory" forum.

Does your R-27/OB have the Genset? The R-23 uses a Westerbeke according to the RT site.

From what I was told, the 23 and the 27 use the same generator. I tried to find noise specs on the Westerbeke site and I couldn't find any.

No, my R-27/OB doesn't have the Genset accessory. The one I saw was in a R-27/OB destined for a dealership and presumably one on the East coast of USA.

The R-27/OB also has the Westerbeke unit.

My guess is that if the Westerbeke web site describing the Genset does not indicate precise noise levels that I presume it's going to be noisy. All I could find on the website was wording such as "...produces some of the most quiet and durable ..... available."

I had a chance to listen to one of the gen sets and while it is not as load as the engine itself at wot, I would say it's about half there. It would be a disturbance in a anchorage. Compared this with a Honda 2000 which is definitely quieter. This one of the reasons I elected not to have it on board. Rather use the space for something else.
