R-27 Fresh Water Pump Replacement - Advice Please

I know it's just a little thing and probably shouldn't bug me but I'm really tired and annoyed of the pulsating pump that comes stock on the R-27 Classic. After reading several threads about replacements, I've ordered the Shurflo Aqua King II 4 gal/min variable speed unit and plan to install it myself.

For those of you that have done this, any advice to make the job easier? Any other mods that I should do at the same time?

I put in the variable flow pump recommended by the factory on my 2012 R27. There was a slight improvement, but it did not eliminate the pulses/surges. The only thing that will eliminate them is an accumulator tank. Some folks have installed them, but I don’t know where it would fit in my boat.

On my classic R27 I installed the tank under the galley sink. (PAR model 30573-0000; capacity 1 liter, charge pressure 10 psi)

This year I installed the 5gpm version of the Aqua King II, replacing an older pump that was failing, and removing an even older accumulator tank. It works very well without the accumulator - smooth water flow. I've been told by a dealer who sells various pumps that it works better without it.

Installation instructions are good, follow them.

I replaced the factory pump in our R27-OB for noise issues. It greatly reduced the the noise, but did not eliminate it. Later I added an accumulator tank and the annoying pulsation was gone. You still hear the system recharging itself (accumulator tank), but I consider that a normal sound for the system.

I wish I had tried the accumulator tank first to see if that would have eliminated the annoying pulsation.

Changing the water pump on my 2012 R27 was straight forward. The mounting footprint was identical. Access is somewhat confined, but pretty typical for these boats. Good luck.

Accumulator, Pump, or both?

I have both and system works great!

Add accumulator first and see how your system works. If less than desired (pulsation noise still there), go for the new, 5 gpm variable flow pump. Voila!

In the cabin bilge below the sink/range aft of the pump. It will be directly connected to the pump and feed the cold water supply. Epoxy a wood block onto the sloped surface below the the access panels at the bottom of the cabinet.

There are a couple of pictures showing the installation of the accumulator in our album. This is an R 25 but I think the R 27 should be similar.
