There has been a tremendous thread regarding Smartplug and the R25.

I am considering one for "Little Tug Boots".

So please advise, I need all of the help I can get.

Thanks

We will be adding one to our R-27, which hasn't been built yet. A good friend, who is also one of the best regarded marine surveyors in the NW, didn't hesitate to tell us it was money well spent. According to that source, 90% of all boat fires at the dock are caused by the shore power connection. Installation of the plug is very easy. Retrofitting the cord may be a bigger challenge. We went with a Smart Plug cord so I can't really speak to that.

Thanks

I have just ordered and I ordered the Smartplug Cord. My patience is not that long in trying to retrofit the cord set. I'll do it later when having power is not an issue.

We will start serious cruising in May and time will be limited between now and then so I would rather have the factory product rather than trusting ME

I had no issue retrofitting a Smart Plug cord. Use some liquid soap to allow the thick cable to slide through the opening, connect three wires, close it up. Wire strippers and a screw driver. Not a big task, but it sure feels more secure when you plug it in.

There were instructions with the female connector we ordered. Maybe a 15 minute job.

Best wishes,
Jim B.

From what I can gather retrofitting it is no major task on either the 25 or 27, I had mine put on during the build and was the first and most important modification for me to ensure less chance of electric fire.

Hi Jurgen

Love your website, and especially love the boat used for the cover shot, which of course is mine

I like the cover shot as well, PhotoShop took care of the tan stripe, since mine is all white cabin. I will replace with my own picture once I get a great shot of her, she will have a navy blue bimini to match.

She is almost here, went to Kent to check out the graphics for the name and get a spare parts kit put together for the Volvo D3-200.

Tomorrow AM Kenny is making the delivery, we are all very excited.

Thanks for the website comment, this is where I will share our adventures.

Jurgen: That transom plate zinc is awesome looking. Did the Factory have to shape it to fit like that ? Also, what is that zinc connected to inside the boat.

I really appreciate your photo slide show, the blog and all the extra equipment reference links... very helpful. Thanks... 🙂

The zinc is all Ranger, what it is connected to on the inside is unclear. But I like it as well, nice size and easy access.

Could you ask Ranger what it's connected to as I'm curious. I added a transom zinc myself (Andrew at the time thought it would be very helpful in controlling the underwater zinc erosion). I connected it to my prop shaft brush as well as the engine block ground. Mine measures 8"x5" whereas your is massive.

Thanks... 🙂

Can't wait to see a Ranger Tug in a blue bikini! 😉

Have an awesome time tomorrow.

Cheers,

Add "Little Debbie" to the list of tugs with a SmartPlug. I bought the conversion kit and an extra cord end so I could also modify the 15A cord used while on the hard.

The 15A cord (Husky 50' 12G extension cord with female end changed) is shown in this photo.

Did my conversion yesterday. Easy job, done in about an hour. Howard, they do make an adapter 20 amp to boat 30 amp. I use my shore power cord and adapter while on the hard. I also have one that is 30 amp for the rv parks to 20 amp and then use the same adapter while in the campgrounds.

Lone Star Ranger has a smartplug as well. Under the supervision of fellow tug owner Ken Dalgleish, we made the conversion in about 30 minutes...just make sure you use plenty of dish soap for lube if you are only changing the plug and keeping the chord. 😀
