The R-29 featured on the cover of Passagemaker magazine features a bicycle, on a rack on the cabin top.
Would anyone know the manufacturer of the bike rack?

Thanks

You could use either Thule or Yakima rack systems. The difference is how much do you want to spend. Both of these can be purchased at your local REI store. I would keep my eye open for an ad in the paper right after the first of the year. They normally run a 20% off sale early in the year.

Capt Chris...

My technical note to you...

Make sure that the component ( Kayak, Bicycle or Cargo System) will fit ... a round cross bar. My R29 was supplied with a 'Thule' Kayak Carrier. However, the standard Thule Kayak Saddle does not fit a round cross bar. I ended up using a 'Yakima Hully Rollers' ( rear) and the 'Mako Aero Saddles' for front bars (Yakima).

This system does work well with the round crossbars...

My suggestion to Ranger was to switch to a High Quality Rectangular Cross bar ... made out of Stainless Steel or Anodized Aluminum. The benefit is a more useful CrossBar that has much more secure ( industry standard) fit that would not twist on the cross bar shaft.

Have a great Christmas

Here are the 'Yakima Rack' links for the Bicycle and the Hully Rollers with Mako Aero Saddles ... by Yakima.

*** The CrossBars are Square ( standard) not rectangular, as I meintioned before).

Has anyone looked into the kayak launch winch like I have on my boat. The new ones are srainless steel tubing and utilize a 12 volt winch. My works great for launching the kayak while at anchor and even while tied broadside at the dock. Nita and I were taking out our kayak with us but found it to difficult to launch. The system is on a track which allows the winch to move from side to side on the boat so launching can be done from either side. It is a one man operation to utilize. If interested call Jeff Messmer at the factory, I am sure he would be willing to give you the details.

Thanks for all the replies!

See here's the issue. We bought the boat a few weeks ago, but won't be picking her up till the Spring.
The boat is in Maryland, and we are in NY. so I can't run down to the boat when I want to measure something.
I was guessing the rail tubing was about 7/8 diameter. I knew I would need a special foot for the rack.
I'll be sure to check out what has been suggested so far.

Chris,
On Solitude and Karma both, I used simple garden hose as a "filler" on the rollers and forward pads. Simply cut one inch sections of any rubber hose, slit it so it will open, wrap it around the crossbars, slide your rack system mounts over it, tighten and you are done.

Like Pete, we have the Yakima rollers and mako pads. This was simply due to cost and simplicity. We purchased all of these at REI.

We also bought Yakima Bicycle Carriers for Solitude but returned them after I discovered I would have to move the "Sports Racks" closer together. I did not feel this supported my Kayak properly having its supports so close together or did I care for how it looked. We opted not to take the bikes with us.

David and Maureen,

I has to Google REI, unfortunately we don't have any near us. But I think I will check out "Dick's Sporting Goods" this weekend.
Love the hose idea, also prevents any scratching of the rail too.

Chris,
Dicks should carry them as well as any kayak shop. You can also google "racks". There are number of stores that specialize in these items.

You sound like me..... worried about scratching the racks! Be sure that you look at putting additional supports on your sports rack if you don't already have them. If you go to my photo page, you will see what I mean. As I would pull my Kayak up on the roof, the aft rack started to wobble.

Good luck!
David

I will admit to be a bit obsessive complusive when it comes to my boats.
We first saw the R-29 at the Newport RI Boat Show in Sept. We fell in love with it, but would first have to sell 2 boats we had, A 37 ft Hunter, and a Stieger Craft Block Island 21. With the current state of the economy, our hopes were not too high. We sold the Hunter 3 weeks after listing it. I would like to think the pristine condition I kept her in contributed to her speedy sale. The Ranger Dealer ( Gratitude) agreed to take the Stieger in on trade.

Lucky dog.... Congrats. 😀

FYI, we found our Yakima system for our roof racks on Craigs List...might be worth a try !

Make sure those racks you purchased "Tim" can adapt to a 1" bar as well since we have changed sizes on the R29

The good thing about the Yakima system is they are designed for a 1" bar. We had to use spacers on Solitude to make them fit.
