I own a 2012 Ranger R-29 and the covering on the salon upholstery is flaking off. The helm chair is especially bad such that I need to have it reupholstered. The boat has 351 hours and has had inside heated storage the 4 years I have owned it (we dock on the west shore of Lake Erie, Michigan). Some questions:
- Is there a product I can use to keep the situation from becoming worse?
- Has anyone else had this problem?
- Did Ranger use a sub-standard upholstery Material? I'm thinking of how long car upholstery lasts, with much greater use.
- Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Bob: There was an upholstery problem on earlier model year R25 and R27's similar to what you describe, not sure about the R29. The folks a Ranger Tugs changed the material in newer model years and had a replacement deal, depending on if you bought new, used , etc. for the earlier model years. I'd suggest calling Andrew or Kenny at Ranger Tugs in Kent to discuss your particular situation. They can be reached at 253-839-5213.

We just bought a 2010 R29 with the same problem. It flakes more with use and we have decided to reupholster. We are unaware of any product that would stop the flaking.

Hello,

For several years we honored a replacement program for the flaking upholstery but that has now come to an end. The material was purchased from a company called Morbern if you wish to reach out to them directly for questions about their products.

The best thing to do from this point on would be to contact a local upholsterer and bring them the upholstery that needs replaced. It will be more cost effective and allow them to wrap the material in their shop.

Thank you for your understanding,

Andrew,
I am having the same problem with my helm seat. Can I purchase new cushions from ranger? I noticed at the Roche rendezvous the helm seat is a different material. Looks a little more durable.

I too need my upholstery replaced, most especially on the pilot seat and the front bench seat. I am trying to take the seats off the boat to take to an upholstery shop and do not see how to get the bench seats removed, nor the 3 back cushions on on the dining table seat closest to the cockpit.

Any suggestions?

Thank you!

On my R-27 there were angle clips holding the front bench seat cushion on. The rear cushions were screwed from behind and underneath, access from the cave.

Our 2013 R25SC (purchased new and also stored indoors when not in use) has the flaking problem. We were unaware that a replacement program even existed. Of course, per Andrew, that program has been terminated. We just removed our seats and have taken them to an upholstery shop for recovering.

what are the ballpark charges people are getting quoted for re-upholstering the bench seats or the single pilot seat?

You can see photos of our reupholster project in our photo album. We were doing a R25 Classic that needed both fabric and foam replaced. Costs for labor and foam for the dinette and port forward bench type seat cushions (6 in all) was $850. We also had the v-berth bolsters redone for $200 more.
I dropped off the helm seat just this morning for rework. Noticed that one of the aluminum seat hinges was cracked so those are being replaced with beefy hinges similar to the ones RT uses now. I’m guessing the labor and new foam for the helm seat will be $250 to $400. Expensive but my butt can no longer handle 3-4 hour stretches on that broken down foam!

PS: Used SuperLux and LuxHighQuality open cell foam from usafoam.com for the flat bench cushions. Very good material (much better than RT uses IMHO) and not too expensive.

excellent info thank you

Does anybody know the manufacturer or product name of the newer upholstery that they switched to in order to prevent that flaking problem? I may try to use that for a replacement job on my 2013 R29 using a local upholstery service.

Please let me know if you find a supplier for material......

I too have the same problem and need to reupolstery.

We reupholstered our R29 with a different product that we thought was better.
It is "Ultraleather". Right after we finished our project a guest accidrntly spilled red wine on our new light colored upholstery. All I did was wipe it up with a sponge. No stain! Good as new! That experience made me a believer in "Ultraleather" products.
