I have pretty much finished my enclosure. This is HOME MADE so that accounts for the amateurish appearance. I used a Sailrite LS1 straight stitch sewing machine and basically copied various elements of others' designs.

My factory supplied surrey top came with NINE zipper sections sewn into the top edge of the canvas to accommodate the canvas enclosure.

I have clear panels to go all the way around. There are also (3) screen panels consisting of a pair of large side panels and an aft panel. I made the side panels LARGE (meaning "double" width or TWO zippers segments per panel). I can see now that this makes the glass panels TOO LARGE to manage. But, the screen panels are fine - very light and foldable. I will probably get more zippers and cut the large side panels in half to make them more manageable. I still need to make the openings at the bottom for the cleats for tying her off and install the "straps" to hold the panels in a rolled up position.

I don't know where I'll keep the panels on the boat...storage aboard the 21EC is minimal. I'm thinking of a bag suspended from the surrey frame to hold the panels stacked together. We'll see...

Here are a few pics...these show the screen panels

Don't look TOO CLOSE...remember, I'm an amateur. It's not pretty but should be functional.

Lookin good. Great Job!

I am IMPRESSED !!

Looks great, what have you done about the water in the channel around the cabin roof ?

I am still looking at a good fix for the water that currently drains into the back area when we have the sides on our enclosure down.

Thanks

Hello Geoff,

No, still no mods to divert the rain water. I've been dragging my feet on that. Have you had any new ideas?

The enclosures are great. But a heavy rain that drains right into the cockpit surly spoils things.

The factory recommends damming the end of the gutter and just forward of the dam, drill a hole slanted downward and outboard, and insert a piece of PVC pipe to provide the drainage. I hope I described it well enough so you can visualize it. They said I could do it myself, but I do not think I could get the gel-coat, etc right so it would look good.

Dave,

Came out very nice.

I've almost gotten up the courage to drill the drain holes. I want to measure the outside diameter of thin wall 1/2" and 3/4" PVC. I plan to use a hole saw to make the hole. They cut fiberglass well if run in reverse.Thinking of shaping the piece of PVC and then using 3M 5200 to set in place.

Hello By,

I've used hole saws many times in fiberglass...always ran them in "forward" and they cut fine. I like to have a small shop vac handy to suck up the nasty dust right at the source.

It sounds temptingly simple to use a hole saw to cut the drain opening. As one looks at the outboard edge of the 21EC pilothouse top, is there any airspace between the "side" and "top" surfaces you will cut through? I took down the trim piece inside the pilothouse today and it appears solid looking up from inside.

I'm with you on the "thin wall" pipe...do you think plain copper pipe would be OK? That would have a thinner wall than sch 20 or SD pvc pipe.

Have you determined how far the drain pipe should protrude from the side of the pilothouse to give good overboard drainage?

Thanks to all the the kind comments on my enclosure.

I would not use copper pipe. You will forever be cleaning the green stain off your boat. Stick with plastic.
