Want to create lounge type seating with a removable insert. Thinking is to fabricate a cushion to fit between engine cover and aft seat. The cushion would rest on drink holders. To attach to aft seat I'm looking at stainless table brackets from Sea Dog Line. Anyone done something similar? Better ideas very welcome.

Hello Ray,

I've never heard of such a modification...but it sounds interesting. Let us know what you come up with.

Off the top of my head I envision a piece of ¾" plywood or similar for strength which fits UNDER the existing aft bench cushion. It would extend forward to the engine box...extending over the Teak cup holders which could be used to secure and "locate" the supporting board in proper position. Then make a cushion to fit which would butt up against the engine box cushion and there you go!

Another thought...the aft end of the plywood support could fit into a 'cleat' rather than extending under the existing cushion. Simple to make...

Do you have a way to sew a Sunbrella cushion cover?

I hope that you are going to post pictures of your project once completed, I am beginning to think of a way to make the rear seat a little more comfortable too. The seat is fine but the backrest tend to move downwards when we sit and our back are against the SS tubing...

As a prototype I cut plywood (not sure but < 1/2") and slid under engine cover cushion. The thin dimension allows engine cover to be snapped down over plywood. Varnished to prevent snags and scratches. To use I release snaps, slide aft and re-snap. Works ok but flexes at aft end. Table brackets should fix. FYI, the brackets look like the ones that secure V berth side cushions.
We'll use a shop in Denver that does cushions for patio furniture and has no problem getting sunbrella fabric. In the past we made a Sunbrella boat cover using a standard sewing machine w/o problem. Lasted for years.
Re back cushions. We use two West Marine "Low Back Go-Anywhere" seats. Just set them on the standard aft seat cushion. Super comfy with good adjustable back support. They fold flat for storage and were seriously discounted.

Equinox is some distance from here. Will get photos next time we sail. Surprised Ranger doesn't offer insert.

Prototype installed. Only glitch was battery minder which caused us to use one bracket. I have photos. If somebody can tell how to post will do so.

Photos in album "Msequinx". So far seems to be a great improvement. Even factory back rests are more comfortable.

We were hanging out on our 21ec the other day and I was snoozing on the engine box cushion with my legs hanging off the back. Now I have a 5 gal bucket on the boat ad 2 smaller 2.5 gallon buckets from HS. My wife (ms. can't leave anything alone) got the 2 side cushions from the Vberth, Put the 2 smaller buckets on the step below the read seat and laid the 2 side cushions from the engine box cushion to the back seat, fit like they were made for it, and now I had a 6 ft bed. My thoughts are to run a small rail across the back seat upright wall (the buckets are a little tacky), strengthen the back on the cushions and I have some more laying around room
