Hello Braintrust! My 2017 R21-EC did not come with a searchlight, so I am adding the JABSCO 12v light. My question is where and how is the best way to mount the controller. Thanks in advance! -Todd

Todd, on my 2009 R-21 the controller for the search light is mounted to the starboard (right) of the radio on the wood shelf above the helm. The control wires are run above the headliner to the smoke stack where there is a plug for the search light and the anchor light. If you need pictures just text me at (509) 539-5509 and I will send. Bob

Be careful where you install the light or the reflection off the stainless railings and white fore deck will be blinding. Just my opinion.

My 2014 R27 has it mounted on the cabin roof. I shines through the hand rail and I find that it’s useless for anything. Even when anchoring and trying to scope the cove. If you mount it higher on the mast so it shines over the railing it may work. My next project is to move it high on the mast to see if that renders it useful for anything.

I agree with the above. Pointing the searchlight dead ahead just blinds you, I use a handheld for that. Using the light port or starboard works well. I have considered moving it forward to the bow or top of the mask but neither seemed like a good solution. Mount your light but get a good hand held. The front rail shine is the issue.

The problem using the search light is not where it's mounted or the light itself! It's the reflection from the shiny forward hand rail at the bow of the boat, it's kinda like shining a flash light in a mirror!
If you eliminate the reflection you will find the search light on the boat works fine no matter the location. This can be accomplished by simply placing a dark color tape on the inside of the hand rails or painting that area. If done right you will not see the area modified except from the cabin area and will not take away from the beauty of your boat. Just my opinion but it works for me. Bob

Thanks bjp and Bob, I did buy a handheld last season and it worked better than the search light. Also I’ll look into masking the aft side of the handrail. Up here in Alaska it’s rare that you’ll cross paths with another boat after cruising all night long. So as far as I’m concerned when you’re out there the more and better light the better.
