Started out replacing the stock exhaust system on our Yanmar 3YM30 with stainless steel parts from HDI Marine in Vancouver, WA. We are spending more time in saltwater and wanted components that would not fail. By the way, if anyone is spending most of their time in fresh water, you can have the stock exhaust parts I removed for free. During the replacement process, I noticed black dust all over the front of the engine. After further investigation I realized it was dust from the fan belt and appears to be a well known problem with this engine. The solution appears to be replacing the stock v-belt with a flat belt and 3 new pulleys (one that fits over the crank pulley, one that replaces the water pump pulley and a replacement for the alternator pulley). A nice alternator belt adjuster comes with the belt/pulley kit from ElectorMaax Marine in Ontario, Canada so I threw it on also. That final modification I made was to install 2 lockdown latches to hold down the engine cover when we are under way. If you hit big enough waves, the cover seems to open up and I did not want that. Photos showing all of these mods are in our Photo Album for Zenyatta.

I am also working on installing an old 4 hp sailboat motor I had laying around to use as a kicker. It will be nice to have if the diesel every quits and we can also us it as a "stern thruster" when we are docking. If it works OK, I may buy an electric outboard from Torqeedo to do the same thing, but would be much quieter and would not have to carry fuel.
