Looking to get one
What does insurance for an R21EC roughly cost? I'm trying to get a handle on actual cost drivers to insure a boat. Things like the best place to store a boat (high and dry, on a trailer, locked storage yard, etc.). Getting a straight quick answer on insurance, without actually owning the boat seems a little harder than I thought. Are there types of boats or boating conditions to avoid that would help keep insurance costs down. I know that living in Florida will cost me, even up here in the panhandle area of what we call "Lower Alabama".

I had mine insured with Nationwide for $300 per year. That got me coverage that would have allowed me to take the boat to the Bahamas if I'd wanted to. I'm not sure if the rates would be the same in Florida as they are here in Texas.

My 21 was added to my Homeowners policy at very little cost, maybe even no charge. They would not do it for the 27 though. Anchor Marine now insures my 27. Very satisfied.

I don't know if the homeowner policy addition will work because the boat would be parked across the street in a locked dry storage area.

One of the things I learned when I insured my R25 when I purchased (new in 2008) was that the insurance would be over $1200/year in FLorida or the 2-3 counties around Mobile, Alabama but only $400/year from same company here in North Alabama or Tennessee. I guess Hurricanes must be a big factor in that. An R21 should be less to insure but make sure you compare prices based on your area.

Not all insurance companies are the same. As discussed, location is a big factor. Marina or trailer, and where the trailer is parked is another big factor. Then you have experience, safety classes, etc. Companies that cater to boat owners (e.g. BoatUS, Progressive, etc.) will often add a bunch of extras in the policy that other companies don't. When comparing companies, be sure to compare apples to apples. A company the charges a little more may actually be a better deal with all the extras you get.
